From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—The sequel to The Jewel (HarperCollins, 2014) picks up within hours of the first volume's end. Violet and Ash's love affair has been discovered by the Duchess of the Lake. In order to save Ash and to survive, Violet must trust The Black Key, a secret society bent upon the destruction of the royals in the Jewel. Violet escapes from the Jewel circle to the Farm circle, along the way learning that surrogates are not the only ones who are being used by the royals: boys are forced to be companions for the wealthy, girls are being kidnapped into slavery, servants are killed on a whim, boys are being conscripted into military service, and children are dying from disease. This realization makes the protagonist determined to end the reign of the royals and discover the true meaning behind the Auguries, the powers that the royals find so desirable in their surrogates. What Violet learns about those powers will change the future of the city. This work has its own fast-paced plot and doesn't just bridge the first book to the third. Questions are answered from the first installment in this tale, backstory and history are provided for better understanding of the workings of the Lone City, and a surprise twist will make readers anxious for the next series entry. VERDICT A must-read for fans of the previous title; they will not be disappointed.—Lisa Nabel, Dayton Metro Library, OH

Not as good as I hoped, but still an okay second installment. . .
By Alicia
3.5 STARS

THE WHITE ROSE was the highly anticipated sequel of THE JEWEL that I've been eagerly awaiting for months. And although it wasn't as good as I hoped it would be, it still had it's perks and has me eagerly anticipating the explosive conclusion I knows to come!

It was a lot slower paced then I would of liked. I mostly read fast-paced books with non-stop action and adventure, and though it did have it's moments with some action and adventure, it was no where near up to par with my standards. About the first half of the book had me contemplating putting it down. Like I said above, it did have mild action, but not the amount I hoped. And the first half was just Violet and her crew trying to make it out of The Jewel and to the farm where their sanctuary lied in The White Rose. And I got bored just having the story plotted around their travel. But once they finally did get to The White Rose it really picked up for me, and I started to enjoy it a lot more. Not that it's pace or action picked up, but the story unfolded and picked up it's plot, and I really got intrigued. And then that was when the magic began, and I was positively hooked. Violet's magic reveals itself and strengths tenfold from her capabilities in book one. And I really enjoyed the direction the plot took and is setting up for the finale in book three!!!

Another issue I had was the romance aspect. It felt strained and forced, and not the same sweet romance I enjoyed from book one. But surprisingly the lacking romance didn't really bother me that much. Ash was an okay love interest, I didn't really have anything against him, or any cause to love him either. But I still wanted more from the romance aspect. I would of liked more spark and chemistry, and though I appreciated that this book wasn't centered around romance like the first book was, but I still wanted more fire from their relationship and interactions. But I concede in a way it was understandable, because Ash and Violet were both going through their own struggles, and dealing with their own demons. So I guess it was okay for them to be a little distant in this middle book, but I expect more from their relationship in the next book!

What I really loved about this book was the fierce magic that was unleashed by the surrogates. It was breathtaking and beautiful to visualize the magical elements that was tapped into by the girls at The White Rose. And how they could make so many flowers grow, and then instantly die in a heart beat. How they could crack concrete, and then mend it back together with a flick of their wrist. It was exhilarating and riveting to watch all that power channeled with a force of magic that will hopefully become the savior of their world! And I can't WAIT to see all the surrogates come together and unleash all their power as one, and bring the end of the evil tyranny of The Jewel once and for all...

I also thought the writing Ewing created was alluring and descriptive, and was easily able to get lost in. The world-building was also a positive in this book. Since the first book I thought the setup of this world was different and intriguing. The circles of the standing classes, starting from the center where The Jewel lies, and the nobility rule, and working it's ways out from the ranks until you get the marsh, the lowest class in their system. And it was fascinating and intriguing, yet sickening and gruesome, how the nobility would use each lower class citizen, no matter their trade, gender or intelligence, and find some wicked way to use that person to their advantage, to help further their agendas regardless of what it was at the time.

THE PLOT

After being sold at the surrogate auction, and forced to give her body to the Duchess of the Lake, Violet thought their was no hope left. But when she meets Ash, a companion to the Duchess's niece, he changes everything and gives her a reason to keep fighting. But then when they're exposed, Ash is beaten and taken away to be murdered, Violet knows time is running out. And if she has any chance of saving Ash and making her planned escape on time, then she will have to form an unlikely alliance, before all is lost and she is forced to give birth to the Duchess's baby.

But making it out of the Duchess's clutches is only the first part of their journey. And Violet and her crew will have to travel through each circle, facing pursuit and unthinkable obstacles, if their going to make it to The White Rose where their magic can be awoken, and their fight to take back the lives that have been stolen from them will begin...

Sadly THE WHITE ROSE wasn't everything I hoped it would be, but still had it's parts that I really enjoyed. It lacked action and adventure throughout most of the book, and the romance was definitely on the back burner with no spark to ignite it. But regardless it was still there, and I have very high hopes that the next book will bring all that and some. But nevertheless, it still had an interesting plot with determined characters, and a magical background that later emerged and took this book to a whole new level, and has me desperately craving the next book in the series to see how it all plays out.

Overall, THE WHITE ROSE had aspects I loved and also hated, but was still a fun read that paints the path for book three, including all the twist and turns that I'm sure is to follow this epic cliffhanger ending. I think book three will definitely be the best in the complete trilogy, and I'm more then eager to find out! So if you enjoy a slower paced dystopian, with a back-burner romance, and a fantasy twist with magic, and determined characters, then THE WHITE ROSE may just be the sequel you were hoping for!!!

NOTE: I received a physical ARC from Harper Teen for reviewing purposes! All opinions expressed are my own and are not influenced in any way!

A great sequel!
By Teresa
This book picks up right where The Jewel left off and it gets going immediately. It is nonstop the whole time and I loved the pace of the book. There were no lulls or downtime and everything that happened was an integral part of the story. I enjoyed The Jewel but I reallllly enjoyed The White Rose.

I really like Violet as a character and I like how she has grown over the two books. She has grown into a strong character and I love her determination to fight and I love her loyalty to her friends even more. But I also love that she is realistic in that she does have doubts and moments where she doesn’t think she can do it and this is where the importance of her friends comes in. Because when she doubts herself, they are there to help pick her up and keep her going.

I also really came to love Ash in this book and their relationship. I really got the sense that while this is still new to them, they do love each other and their actions proved that beyond a doubt. Both of them have had rough lives and they understand that in one another. I also loved that they did argue and disagree, but those arguments never caused such a rift that they doubted one another, at the end of it all they knew they had one another. I love that Ash wants to fight and make a difference and I felt terrible when people continually overlooked him. But his time is coming, I can feel it.

And then we have Raven and Garnet. Raven is such a fantastic character and I adore her friendship with Violet. I am a big supporter of positive female friendships in YA and that is exactly what Violet and Raven have. And Garnet surprised me in this one and I’m definitely a big fan. He is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters in the series. Oh and Lucien. Lucien on the other hand is on my last nerve, I don’t care how smart he is or what he is doing, I wanna smack him.

Like I said, this one just keeps going from beginning to end and I really enjoyed that. And then the ending just drops on a dime and will leave you reeling for the next book. Waiting is really going to suck.

The White Rose is a good read and will keep readers addicted. If you want nonstop action, good characters, magic, and a truly dark and twisted world you should give this series a read.

A fast-paced, exciting, gripping, and tension-filled sequel
By Fiktshun
THE WHITE ROSE is fast-paced, exciting, gripping, and tension-filled. It picks up the story right where it left off after a cliffhanger ending that can only be called killer. It takes readers and characters alike on a nail-biting journey through other parts of the Lone City, reveals things about the surrogates and the royals that were previously unknown, sets the stage for an uprising, uncovers a sinister plan, and answers all those burning questions about the Auguries.

It is a sequel that delivers even more action than its predecessor. It’s a bit darker and more intriguing. It offers up details about the world, its history, its powers. It introduces new characters. It takes the story in a new direction. It is surprising, and fascinating, and immensely entertaining. It’s a suspenseful, edge-of-your-seat read that’s totally unputdownable.

Forced to flee the Jewel, Violet will have to put her trust in an unexpected ally if she wants to have any chance of making it to safety. She was supposed to have traveled alone but there was no way she was going to leave her friends behind. Even if it put her, put them all, in greater danger.

With no idea where she’s heading, or what she’s supposed to do once she gets there, Violet begins to question whether she made the right choice. But if the alternative is staying with the Duchess of the Lake, remaining property, being known only as Lot 197, facing the very real possibility of death, she doesn’t think she did choose wrong.

Even without a guarantee of safety, or freedom, or victory, the possibility of them all is worth every risk. She’ll just have to keep reminding herself of that fact when the Regimentals get too close, when the wanted posters plastered throughout every circle limit their chances of going undetected, when she learns what it is that’s expected of her.

Amy Ewing did an incredible job expanding on her story with this sequel, opening it up to new possibilities, exploring the history of the Lone City, sharing its darkest secrets, revealing the source of the Auguries’ power, changing up the setting, giving it a more focused purpose. She introduces some changes to her characters, making some more sympathetic, others stronger, others weaker, and others even more heartless than they’d been. She picks up the pace, ratchets up the danger, and adds in a number of surprises, producing a story that is absolutely riveting.

THE WHITE ROSE is a must for fans of the series, for readers who enjoy sequels that have substance, move the plot forward, improve upon the original, and that continue to astonish, thrill, enthrall. And with a jaw-dropping and somewhat abrupt ending, it will leave readers desperately awaiting the next installment.

The Feasts of Memory: A Journey to a Greek Island, by Elias Kulukundis

The Feasts of Memory is a book that inspires all those who left their homeland behind as well as those in search of new realms. Elias Kulukundis traces the course of a family’s emigration from Kasos island to Syros, the formerly commercial capital of Greece, and then from Syros to London and New York. He is equally at home describing expatriates around a dinner table in exile or delving into the motivating passions of the Aegean islands, some of them, in the words of The New Yorker Magazine, as savage as Homer's.

Elias felt he needed to write The Feasts of Memory in order to learn about himself. At the age of 29, he dramatized how a young Greek-American growing up on the edge of a golf-course in Westchester County could discover a spiritual connection to a barren island in the south Aegean Sea.

The Feasts of Memory is Elias’ narrative recreation on life on the island of Kasos, when both his grandfathers were sea-captains, and both his grandmothers were knobbly-handed island women who held house and home together while the men were away at sea.

The book captures the vivid and often eccentric characters and customs that ran through the family’s history, while it dramatizes the role of two of its most dominant women. The book is a stimulating combination of Mediterranean travelogue and the author’s autobiography as a ship owner and writer, seen through a collection of stories with wider historic and anthropological overtones. It creates a living picture of life in a Greek shipping family as it existed in the early twentieth century.

The book brings to life a world of ancient traditions and colorful customs that will inspire anyone wishing to discover Greece. It captures the nostalgia and excitement that accompany one’s search for origins as a key to one’s identity and meaning in life.

This edition includes a preface by the author and an expanded chapter with material about his late beloved cousin Michael Kulukundis, both written in 2013 specifically for this edition.

Musings on Kasos
By C. Moschopoulos
What a lovely book full of stories remembered and shared about the life on Kasos and the Kasoites. The myths and mythologies that we all embroider about our families and the past Mr Kulukundis uncovers about his. They are a feast to be savored, about things long gone but still in the memories of those who remained. How wonderful that the author was able to return to Kasos, his family's origin and record these stories before they were lost forever. He speaks of "xenitia" a Greek word and concept meaning in brief, homesickness. But as he explains it it is much more to the Greek than simply homesickness. It is a longing for the roots, for the homeland. So when one is uprooted from an island to Athens or from one island to another or from Greece to another country this creates 'xenitia', the longing. His own longing for his roots took him on a journey around the islands where his family originated and migrated. The book is a recounting of what he learned and experienced.

Three Thousand Years of Chinese Painting, by Richard Barnhart, Yang Xin, Nie Chongzheng, Professor James Cahill, Lang Shaojun, Hung Wu, Ri

From Neolithic painted petroglyphs, early paintings on silk, and landscapes by twelfth-century literati to the traditional handscrolls being produced today, Chinese painting has always had the power to enthrall. This magnificent book, written by a team of eminent international scholars, is the first to recount the history of Chinese painting over a span of some three thousand years. Drawing on museum collections, archives, and archaeological sites in China—including many resources never before available to Western scholars—as well as on collections in other countries, the authors present and analyze the very best examples of Chinese painting: more than 300 of them are reproduced here in color. Both accessible to the general reader and revelatory for the scholar, the book provides the most up-to-date and detailed history of China’s pictorial art available today.
In this book the authors rewrite the history of Chinese art wherever it is found—in caves, temples, or museum collections. They begin by grounding the Western reader in Chinese traditions and practices, showing in essence how to look at a Chinese painting. They then shed light on such topics as the development of classical and narrative painting, the origins of the literati tradition, the flowering of landscape painting, and the ways the traditions of Chinese painting have been carried into the present day. The book, which concludes with a glossary of techniques and terms and a list of artists by dynasty, is an essential resource for all lovers of, or newcomers to, Chinese painting.
Three Thousand Years of Chinese Painting is the inaugural volume in a new series, The Culture & Civilization of China, a joint publishing venture of Yale University Press and the American Council of Learned Societies with the China International Publishing Group in Beijing. The undertaking will ultimately result in the publication of more than seventy-five volumes on the visual arts, classical literature, language, and philosophy, as well as several comprehensive reference volumes.

Amazon.com Review
This book is a rare feat: seldom is an art history--much less an ambitious, 400-page chronicle of one of the great cultural achievements of the last three millennia--as much a delight for the amateur lover of art as it is indispensable for the student of the field. Written by three eminent specialists in the United States and three in China, Three Thousand Years of Chinese Painting combines the best of both countries' scholarly approaches with new discoveries and illustrations of numerous paintings located in China and previously little known abroad.

Insightful, often lively discussions tell the story in six chapters, mostly dynastic, after briefly giving two "approaches" to Chinese painting. History, politics, biography, and training get their proper due and are complemented by often-detailed analyses of individual artworks. Close attention to the text and the 300 color and 25 black-and-white illustrations enable the reader to "see" these paintings--which are often constructed on different perceptual and cultural premises than the post-Renaissance and photographic images by which most Westerners structure their visual vocabulary. The glossary and other tools are welcome aids; the list of artists is organized by period and offers their names in the two most common romanization systems as well as in Chinese characters. And to read James Cahill on the Ni Zan paintings that may at first appear uninviting, or Lang Shaojun on the proportionally numerous 20th-century painters, is a real adventure for both the eye and the mind.

Anyone with more than a passing interest in one of the world's most esteemed art traditions--be they a Sunday museumgoer or a confirmed lover of the gnarly pines set amidst the towering mountains of the Song-period masters--will want this book in their library. --Joseph N. Newland

From Library Journal
In this major work of scholarship, six top China scholars from the United States and China present their varied assessments as well as a panoramic view on the development of Chinese pictorial arts grounded in Chinese cultural tradition and artistic practice. Through analyzing masterpieces from Neolithic painted petroglyphs, early paintings on silk, and landscapes by 12th-century literati to traditional handscrolls created in modern times, the authors showcase the riches of Chinese pictorial heritage. Comprehensively covering mainstream traditional Chinese paintings, they also touch upon often neglected areas such as women artists and works featuring common people, though folk paintings are not mentioned. The inclusion of more than 250 stunningly beautiful color plates and 75 black-and-white reproductions make this one of the most complete and best-illustrated works on the topic of Chinese pictorial art available to both general readers and scholars. The inaugural volume of a projected 75-volume series on Chinese culture, this is highly recommended for all academic and larger public libraries.?Lucia S. Chen, NYPL

From Kirkus Reviews
``One should learn from nature and paint the image in one's mind.'' No, this is not the credo of a Western impressionist but of Zhang Zao, an eighth-century Chinese painter. Anyone familiar with the ethereal nature of the landscape painting, the delicacy of bird, branch, and flower in pen-and-ink drawings, will recognize the influence of Zhang Zao's notion in Chinese painting. As Barnhart, an art historian at Yale, and his collaborators (several of them on the staff of the Palace Museum in Beijing) show, this artistic tradition has its origins in the Asian equivalent of the Lascaux cave paintings, dating back to the Neolithic era. The history of this exceptional art, its practitioners and their technique, and the metaphorical significance attributed to the artworks are all discussed in illuminating detail, ending with the contemporary neoclassical works that draw on tradition but add a modern flavor. The text is accompanied by 300 fine color and 25 black-and-white reproductions of extraordinary works, many never before available in the West. Consider this the Janson's of Chinese painting. -- Copyright 1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Best overview of the chinese painting history
By Yukikochan
I can only recommend this book. There is described the whole chinese painting history, about all artists, their paintings and so on. In addition to the descriptions, there are many illustrations, many famous works related to the painters so that you can connect the written facts with the paintings. They are wonderful big and colored pictures.
In the beginning of the book there is even a choronology, a list of all the emperors and a map of China; as in the back of the book there is a list of the artists assorted by period, the names displayed in pinyin, Gade-Wales, other transciptions and even with the chinese characters.
For me this was one of the best purchases I ever made, to get such a great book is nearly priceless. Right now I use it for my studies, but I will use it forever.

If you want to have an academic book of the chinese painting or just now more about them, then buy it!

A Promising Introduction
By Richard
I was looking for a book on Chinese painting with plenty of illustrations. In the Amazon reviews this book was praised for it's ample examples of paintings. I ordered this book and the pictures did not let me down.

But the essays written by five experts were a surprising bonus of enjoyable informative commentaries providing concise but comprehensive introductions to painters and their works. This is just the book for a new comer to Chinese painting.

One book hasn't made me an authority, but I now know about the southern and northern schools, recognize some Daoist and Buddhist influences on painting, and I've seen an example of Guanxiu's distorted visages, have wondered at Gou Xi's 'Early Spring', have seen Fan Kuan's massive mountain reduce humans to paltry piddling beings verging on non-entities, have appreciated bird, animal, and delicate plant portraits and Liang Kai's distinct images as well as many other worthies.

Some of the most fascinating and aestheticly moving paintings to me are Wang Shen's 'Serried Hills Over a Misty River', Ma Lin's 'Sunset Landscape' and Xia Gui's 'Twelve Landscapes'; all paintings that elevate emptiness to an integral part of the scene giving outlined forms a vulnerable lonliness. These paintings take Miles Davis's advice a thousand years before he spoke it "Don't play[paint] what's there, play[paint] what's not there.

After being introduced to some of the artists and their works, I wish more of their art had been included, but then what better accolade can an introductory book receive than it leaves you wanting more.

My wife loves it.
By Nikwax
I gave this to my wife as a gift. She is an accomplished artist, and has been working with Chinese painting for about a decade. She loves this book, and recons it will take years to get through on a deep level.

Dispelling Wetiko: Breaking the Curse of Evil, by Paul Levy

There is a contagious psychospiritual disease of the soul, a parasite of the mind, that is currently being acted out en masse on the world stage via a collective psychosis of titanic proportions. This mind-virus—which Native Americans have called "wetiko"—covertly operates through the unconscious blind spots in the human psyche, rendering people oblivious to their own madness and compelling them to act against their own best interests.

Drawing on insights from Jungian psychology, shamanism, alchemy, spiritual wisdom traditions, and personal experience, author Paul Levy shows us that hidden within the venom of wetiko is its own antidote, which once recognized can help us wake up and bring sanity back to our society.

Review
"This book brilliantly exposes how the very roots of the madness that is threatening life on earth are ultimately to be found within our own psyche. I love that Paul is taking seriously the profound implications of what it means that all of us are living in a mass, shared dream. His startlingly clear premise challenges me to reflect upon both the world and myself in radically mind-altering ways. Something important is coming through his imagination-filled musings; his visionary insight into the intrinsic genius of our species feels inspired by a truly creative, compassionate, and enlivening spirit. I always look forward to reading Paul's work; it stimulates me to greater heights of lucidity, disturbs me enough to awaken me out of my complacency, and encourages me to fly on the wings of the creative imagination. The world would be a better place if everyone read this book. His vision is a royal gift for all of us. It makes me want to sing. Bravo!"
—Sting

"Dispelling Wetiko is one of those rare, courageous books that leads us where we would prefer not to go: into the depths of our own shadow. Yet this is the most essential journey for our present time.… It is a must-read, without a doubt."
—Caroline Myss, author of Anatomy of the Spirit

"Paul Levy summons us by Wisdom's call to community, action, and our higher humanity. Truly initiatory, this book is inviting us to step through the looking glass and consciously participate in our own evolution. In exposing our psychic blindness, Levy is helping us to open our eyes and see."
—Thom Hartmann, author of The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight

"When I read Dispelling Wetiko, I was unprepared for a work of such true brilliance and depth. Paul Levy should be congratulated on writing a seminal work."
—Brad Steiger, author of Revelation: The Divine Fire

"No one else writing in America today, in whatever genre, sees into the real nature of our crushing global endgame emergency more deeply, steadily, or wholly than Paul Levy."
—Eric Larsen, author of A Nation Gone Blind and professor emeritus at John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY)

"Paul Levy has broadened his hard-won personal insights into a trenchant diagnosis of the mass-mind psychosis afflicting our Western (and indeed now global) civilization. I honor Paul's courage and discernment in taking on this most elusive and treacherous of topics and showing the steps one can take to move toward liberation. Dispelling Wetiko deserves to be widely read and studied."
—Ralph Metzner, PhD, professor emeritus at the California Institute of Integral Studies and author of The Unfolding Self

"I very much recommend Paul Levy's writings. Synthesizing a deep understanding of Jungian psychology and spirituality, his work brilliantly illuminates the dreamlike nature of reality."
—Dr. Arny Mindell, founder of process-oriented psychology and author of The Shaman's Body

"The world is suffering from the globalization of selfishness, materialism, and militarism, and Paul Levy, in his magnum opus, Dispelling Wetiko, identifies their roots in a cancer of the soul.… An insightful and provocative manifesto on how to combat this global epidemic before it is too late."
—Rabbi Michael Lerner, editor of Tikkun magazine, chair of the Interfaith Network of Spiritual Progressives, and author of The Left Hand of God

"As a people, we seem to be seriously impaired. It is as if we have suffered a culture-wide stroke that has damaged the higher centers that control our ability to reason and act in rational ways. What will see us through? What will help us wake up from this slow suicide? Paul Levy's Dispelling Wetiko is a valuable step in the right direction. This desperately needed book not only sounds an alarm, but also points to a solution."
— Larry Dossey, MD, author of The One Mind and executive editor of Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing

"In these dire straits, many extraordinary people—in all walks of life, speaking in different tones and voices—envision the nondual experience of the nature of mind. Paul Levy is one of them. [He] evokes a clear and scintillating vision, resolving much of the incongruity of our existence."
—Keith Dowman, author of Natural Perfection: Longchenpa's Radical Dzogchen

"Paul Levy hits the archetypal nail on the head when he identifies debt pushers, consumption pushers, and GOD (gold, oil, and drug) pushers as the cannibalistic offenders in today’s society.… I can’t express how brilliant I find this book."
—Iona Miller, coauthor of The Modern Alchemist: A Guide to Personal Transformation

"This rich and fascinating book is full of original insights that challenge us to see the human predicament in a new way."
—Timothy Freke, author of The Jesus Mysteries and The Mystery Experience

"Paul Levy's provocative and insightful book Dispelling Wetiko shines a light on the darkness and exposes evil as an illusion—one that nonetheless impacts our reality. It is particularly important in these evolutionary times that those who see themselves as 'bringers of the light' understand the heart of darkness as well.… Kudos to Paul Levy for taking on this topic."
—Steve Bhaerman, coauthor of Spontaneous Evolution

"Paul Levy is a great social critic and public intellectual—his distinctive metaphysical idealism and experience-based mysticism gives his oeuvre a spiritual depth that is lacking even among our best critical theorists. Unlike many other spiritually informed political activists, Paul’s spirituality is never saccharine or clich, his politics never compromising. His profound psychological insights and treasure trove of metaphors and literary tropes enable him to advance a highly original theoretical perspective grounded in Jung’s thought, quantum physics, Buddhism and his own transpersonal revelations. His message to social activists is that the alternative to neoliberal barbarism and the advent of ecological catastrophe is the willingness to cultivate the power of the communal imagination…Paul Levy represents the future."
—Seth Farber, Ph.D., Assessing Editor, The Journal of Mind and Behavior and author of The Spiritual Gift of Madness: The Failure of Psychiatry and the Rise of The Mad Pride Movement

"Paul Levy is one of the wisest, most spiritually-wide-awake people I've had the privilege of getting to know."
—Kevin Barrett, Truth Jihad Radio

"Paul Levy is one of our time's most original thinkers on the human condition."
—Alan Steinfeld, NewRealities

"Paul Levy's Dispelling Wetiko is among the very best books on the nature of evil that I have ever read, and because it offers a workable way out of the universal psychosis that native peoples call Wetiko, possibly the most important on the subject that I have had the pleasure of adding to my library. A real treasure."
—Whitley Strieber, UnknownCountry.com, Dreamland radio show

"This volume, like its predecessor, is not only fascinating, riveting, and, like all Levy's work, consistently crunchy and prickly with thought, but it is also, in two words, overwhelmingly revelatory... A guarantee: Neither while reading nor after reading Dispelling Wetiko will you again look at the world around you the same way as you might have before."
—The Oliver Arts & Open Press

"Paul Levy's book is the finest recent example of what Jungian or archetypal criticism has to offer in the diagnosis of contemporary culture and, specifically, the problem of evil and how to find a way out of its dominance in our world."
—Walter Davis, author of Death's Dream Kingdom: The American Psyche since 9-11, and Professor Emeritus in the Department of English at Ohio State University

"Every so often a book comes into one's possession that dramatically and radically decimates one's world view. For me reading 'Dispelling Wetiko: Breaking the Curse of Evil' has been one of them."
—Peter Morris, LightoftheLogos.com, MysteriesofSirius.com

“For millennia, humanity has struggled to understand the manifestation of evil in our world. In this regardDispelling Wetikois an extraordinary book, and author Paul Levy has made a great contribution to our understanding of the evil that is happening in our world today, as well as who and what we are.”
—Hank Wesselman PhD., anthropologist and author ofThe Bowl of Light,The Spiritwalker Trilogy, and the award-winningAwakening to the Spirit World: The Shamanic Path of Direct Revelationwith Sandra Ingerman

"A true book of genius; one everybody should read."

Casting a Light on the Shadow
By Tamera S. Allred
"Dispelling Wetiko, Breaking the Curse of Evil," by Paul Levy is a couregous, fascinating, and thought-provoking book. Many years ago when I was in my early twenties I had an eery and disturbing exposure to true evil. I was working as a newspaper reporter and reported on the famous Gary Gilmore murder case and execution. I was given access to over 1,000 pages of letters Gilmore had written from death row recounting his life story, and confessing and describing the murders of the two young men he had murdered. Gilmore had said in his letters that murder is an acceptable act of rage. The evil I was exposed to in reading the letters shadowed me for years. How I wish this precious offering of a book had been placed in my hands earlier. But few their be that have the guts to touch such a touchy subject.
With his own life experience with evil as a powerful motivating force Levy writes, "There is a pscyhospiritual disease of the soul that originates within ourselves and that has the potential either to destroy our species or to wake us up.. ." He speaks of evil as being at "the root of humanity's inhumanity to itself." And he explains that it grows in the petrie dish of unconsciousness.
Recent violent acts in the United States shine the light on our culture as a whole. There is a compelling need for introspection about the kind of emotional climate that gives way to senseless acts of violence. While a reasonable discussion about gun control is relevant, to not go deeper would miss the mark. What are our attitudes toward the mentally ill, the different and odd among us? Do we care about how we tend to criminals and those who have been labeled criminal who are innocent? How is power shared? How are we desensitized? Levy asks, "What is our part in this literal collective unconsciousness?
"We are truly at war," Levy writes. "It is not the war we imagine we are in. It is the war to stay conscious of our own inner shadow, to be aware of how easily we can lose track of our own psyches to the spell Weitko casts."
As he explains, "The Wetiko colllective psychosis is a field phenomenn and needs to be contemplated as such. The field itself is not a seperately existing thing, but a dynamically evolving living process in which we are all participants, simultaneously creating and being created by."
His book is a brilliant echo of "The Soul's Code" by Jungian Psychologist James Hillman in which Hillman states," . . . without a strong conviction that the demonic is always among us -- and not only in its extreme criminal forms -- we hide in denial and wide-eyed innocence which also opens wide the gate to the worst."
Indeed, Levy takes a sweeping view of the many facets of life and how they can be affected by Wetiko -- government, economics, the media, psychoanalysis, always taking the discussion back to the depth and shadows of our own psyche challenging us to notice how Wetiko casts its wiley shadow right within if we do not awaken within our own dream (or nightmare as it were.)
This book is not for the faint of heart, but has the power to throw open the windows and let in the light on a subject that is calling for reflection. I highly recommend it.

Make it more personal
By Short Dog
I read all the praise and positive reviews and realized that I had a somewhat different view of this book. Prior to reading it I had never heard of the term wetiko but I came across it in the documentary, "I Am." So I bought Levy's book, started reading it, then discovered Levy's website and his many articles, some of which really resonated with me. I am African American and a few years ago I had travelled to the Amazon Basin of Peru. I took the shaman's visionary medicine and saw for myself many of the same things that Levy was saying about wetiko, but before I knew the word. In effect, Levy was validating my experience and speaking to some deeper truths in my life. I grew up in the Jim Crow South under segregation. My mother, younger sister, and I came to the NYC, the south Bronx. I was 12 years-old during the 70s and in the urban jungle I found at least as much segregation and prejudice and poverty that we ironically sought to escape in the South. These conditions, as far as I can tell from visiting family still there, have deepened since I left the 'hood. So looking in the rearview mirror, I went to the Amazon and sat with the shamans in five ritual ceremonies over nine days to understand 1) how my experience being black and poor had affected me and 2) why conditions in the 'hood persist to this day with seeming tenacity despite the "wars" on crime, poverty, and drugs. In the real jungle I saw in my visions, among other things, that conditions in the `hood were not necessarily what they seemed to be. Namely, they were not independent and separate, standing alone and isolated, from what was going on elsewhere. Rather, the `hood was a microcosm for what was happening in world, especially to indigenous cultures, when faced with disease, guns, steel, and Western education. In other words, if I really wanted to know the state of the world and how modern people were destroying it and themselves, I saw that I didn't need to count CO2 per billion, polar bears, or ice sheets. I could just go to the local prison and count the number of black men "on ice." I could go to the 'hood which is easy enough to find and note the conditions of its schools. I could go to the public housing projects, not 15 minutes from my home and see what they are about. After I returned to the U.S. from the Amazon, I understood that dividing and separating, delineating, demarcating, ghettoing was itself part of the problem. This "crazy" relationship between the 'hood and the world is exactly the name Levy seems to call "wetiko." He puts words to these things and I am profoundly grateful for his honesty and insight. Suffice it to say that as I was reading Levy's online essays I found he was saying original and interesting things when he was most personal, e.g., when he discusses his experiences at the hands of psychiatrists and the psychiatric-industrial complex. I wanted to know more what it was like being Levy. In a paradoxical way, the more he personalized his writing, the more general it was. It was like I could see myself in his experiences. I could identify with his pains and efforts, as well as his joys and personal discoveries. However, the book, Wetiko, takes a different path. He steps out of his personal experience, which is where his power lies. He writes about wetiko rather his experiences of wetiko. He goes into many generalities and political claims which I, for one, found difficult to follow or believe. I'm ok with political activism. I accept the Iroquois view, namely, spirituality is the highest form of political awareness. Yet, an honest assessment of the crisis right here at home in the `hood suggests that no amount of legislation, money, or well-intentioned efforts of the wealthiest nation the world has ever known has managed so far to disrupt conditions there. Indeed, it could be said in a certain way that legislation and political activism created those conditions. That's not to say that politics can't or won't alleviate them but they haven't in the last 50 years. Marianne Williamson has said, "The revolution that will save the world is ultimately a personal one."

A timeless gift, in the nick of time.
By John Hubbird
Thanks to Paul Levy, the cat is now out of the bag, the genie out the bottle. The very nature of Light, is to expose or illumine that which is not light, i.e. darkness; which is precisely what Levy masterfully illustrates between the covers of "Dispelling Wetiko ..." With this book's release, there is no longer any excuse for being oblivious as to how Evil operates in the World. Evil diminishes and distorts our shared dream, turning our so-called "reality" into a simplistic Spy v. Spy cartoon of "seeming opposites", which left unchecked, relentlessly exploits polarities to spawn epidemics of war, addiction, genocide, and a host of other Archetypal Evils onto the world stage -- conjuring all manner of pointless suffering for millions of the poorest and most vulnerable, caught in the cross-fire.

But Mr. Levy turns all this on it's head, by redirecting our attention to the collective non-local field of potentiated lucid consciousness, ready to interconnect us in wakefulness to creatively recover a right-sized sense of aliveness, and joyful abundance. In this amazing book, Paul Levy artfully puts into words what few have dared to even try: he convincingly sheds a light of compassion to illumine the Darker Side of human consciousness, meticulously tracking the psyche's unconscious shadowy machinations. Chapter by chapter, this book deflates, deciphers and dissipates Archetypal Evil's illusory powers, excavating the way to long hidden Treasures buried there.

Letting no one off the hook, Mr. Levy calls upon every human being to step up, to muster the courage to do personal "inner work", to expose evil where ever it is, within or without, dispelling it's faux-power. To accomplish this, the author strings together Jungian psycho-spiritual & Ancient Wisdom pearls, as open-source insights to see more clearly, beyond the simplistic "consensus reality" pushed by the corporate media. Dispelling Wetiko is our road-map away from Hell on Earth. As it turns out, this book is arriving just in the nick of time; it's a great gift to Humanity that will keep on giving into the future, if we should be so lucky.
