A Brief History of Old Testament Criticism: From Benedict Spinoza to Brevard Childs, by Mark S. Gignilliat

Modern Old Testament interpretation arose in an intellectual environment marked by interest in specific historical contexts of the Bible, attention to its literary matters, and, most significantly, the suspension of belief. A vast array of scholars contributed to the large, developing complex of ideas and trends that now serves as the foundation of contemporary discussions on interpretation. In A Brief History of Old Testament Criticism, Mark Gignilliat brings representative figures—such as Baruch Spinoza, W.M.L. de Wette, Julius Wellhausen, Hermann Gunkel, and others—and their theories together to serve as windows into the critical trends of Old Testament interpretation in the modern period. This concise overview is ideal for classroom use. It lays a foundation and provides a working knowledge of the major critical interpreters of the Old Testament, their approaches to the Bible, and the philosophical background of their positions. Each chapter concludes with a section For Further Reading, directing students to additional resources on specific theologians and theories.

Immensely interesting summary of the modern view of the Bible
By Derek Leman
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary review copy from the publisher.

The question underlying the biographical and explanatory chapters of this book is simple: is academic study of the Bible at odds with faith in its message? Gignilliat alludes several times to another excellent volume, Michael Legaspi's The Death of Scripture and the Rise of Biblical Studies. Legaspi concludes that reading the Bible as scripture will always be contradicted by studying it academically, because the two forms of reading have such different strategies. But Gignilliat wonders if we must consign ourselves to that conclusion.

I did not anticipate how much I would enjoy reading A Brief History of Old Testament Criticism (which I will call BHOTC). It's surely not a book that all readers will resonate with, but I would suggest especially if you have taken religion classes on a college level, this book could be for you. If names like Wellhausen, Gunkel, Albright, and Childs came up in your reading, or issues such as the J,E,D,P theory (the Documentary Hypothesis of the Pentateuch), this book may put the puzzle together for you.

I not only read the book, but limited myself to one chapter per day just to spread out the joy and benefit of reading it. I highlighted and color coded points for later reference and decided BHOTC will be a ready reference at times when the history of academic study of the Hebrew Bible is an issue for me. I found the entire reading to be a spiritual journey for several reasons. First, like the author and like his clear favorite of all the scholars summarized (Brevard Childs), I read the Bible confessionally (as scripture, I believe somehow in all of it God is speaking to Jews and Christians today). Second, also like Gignilliat and Childs, I read the Bible critically. I take time to notice details, which often lead to discovering discrepancies and problems that make a simplistic reading of the Bible impossible. Third, by raising throughout the different issues that have surfaced and different theories through modern times, BHOTC helped me think about possible approaches along the way.

Not everyone will be a close reader of the Bible. Many will prefer drawing surface comforts from cherry-picked scriptures and pretending this is adequate. That certainly has been the popular religious approach I have witnessed. Yet, as a favorite "faith and science" blogger (RJS, as she calls herself, on Scot McKnight's popular "Jesus Creed" blog) said recently: our faith is not fragile to investigation.

I believe academic study of the Bible can work with scriptural belief in the Bible. I believe the paradox between the two, which Legaspi documented so well, can be bridged.

BHOTC, begins with perhaps the greatest skeptic (Spinoza) and ends with perhaps the greatest believer (Childs) in the spectrum of paradigm-changing critics of the Hebrew Bible. I will briefly summarize the personalities and approaches as Gignilliat develops them in each chapter.

Benedict Spinoza (1632-1677) was banned by his own Jewish community and regarded as a heretic in his day. He was an original philosopher who learned from Descartes and went off on his own directions. Regarding the Bible, Spinoza was determined to read it in light of natural reason without presuming infallibility or that there was a true heavenly source to its words. He observed that the Torah says Moses heard God's words and told the people what God (allegedly) said. The gift of prophecy, said Spinoza, was imagination. The Bible can be read as a piece of literature, a set of ideas, but not as the living voice of God in any sense. Spinoza was very daring and ground-breaking in saying such things publicly.

W.M.L. DeWette (1780-1849) is little known today outside specialist circles, but Gignilliat says of him "DeWette's influence on nineteenth-century biblical studies can hardly be overestimated." Wellhausen (see next paragraph) said that everything he wrote about was to found already in DeWette. DeWette accepted rationally that the Bible's history was unfactual. Yet he was a Romantic in philosophy and sought a way to value the text outside of scientific and historical approaches. It is the worldview of the ancient authors which should be valued. They may have got their history wrong, but their ideas soared with greatness. Israel's religious history is a set of great ideas of antiquity, not to be taken as infallible, but as building blocks along the way as humans understand God and the world. As the ideas of the Greeks and Romans inspire modern thought, so should the ideas of the Hebrews.

Julius Wellhausen (1844-1918) is a name well-known to any who have taken a college level religion class dealing with the Bible. He did not invent the J,E,D,P theory (Documentary Hypothesis), but is its best-known early expositor. Gignilliat says in particular what Wellhausen did that was new was to write a history of Israel based on his ideas of when the four source documents of the Hexateuch (he believed Joshua belonged with the first five books). He took the J,E,D,P theory and made it the basis of a historical sketch of Israel's supposedly evolving faith. Wellhausen quit his post at a seminary, to his own hurt, out of a sense of integrity, and sought a purely academic position, after realizing what his approach would be. Wellhausen showed that assuming the Hexateuch is the earliest writing in the Bible fails to explain numerous elements of other parts of the Bible (for example, why it was not deemed wrong for Samuel to make offerings as a non-priest and to do so at high places). He believed that the prophets were earlier than the so-called Mosaic Torah. His theories tended to be counter to Judaism, so that the priestly laws (and later the rabbinic laws) are a legalism opposed to the earliest (allegedly best) free worship in the days of the prophets. As Gignilliat puts it, he pitted "prophecy against institution" and espoused a free worship in a Protestant style.

Herman Gunkel (1862-1932) is the father of form criticism. So much of what is written in the Bible had to have existed in the form of ideas, songs, poems, public readings, and stories before being written down. Comparing the Bible to Near Eastern literature, all the more we can see and theorize about pre-literary forms, early and later written forms, and also the possible settings in which stories and poems were used. Gunkel's interest was in these pre-literary forms, especially for things like worship texts (Psalms) and myth-like language about creation (the Spirit hovering, Leviathan, pillars of the earth, etc.). Gunkel (much like DeWette and Wellhausen) wanted to discover what the ancient Israelites believed at different points in history, to look at Israelite faith as the object of studying the Bible. The Bible is not inspired, said Gunkel, but he clearly believed it was inspiring. He is associated with the term sitz im leben or the life-setting of parts of the text. So, for example, he categorized Psalms and might conclude that a particular Psalm began as a public song of praise but that a later author added a personal lament to the pre-exisiting praise Psalm. Or he might conclude that Israel must have had annual enthronement ceremonies for the king and that certain Psalms were written for such occasions. Like Wellhausen he believed the earliest forms were purer and simpler. The final form of the text is not what is to be studied, but the layers must be found and their life-settings theorized to study the history of Israel's religion and learn from it as from any other history or literature.

Gerhard von Rad (1901-1971) pioneered the tradition-historical approach. He was "listening for the word of God in Israel's scriptural legacy" according to Gignilliat. His students, including Brevard Childs, regarded him as a genius and a powerfully persuasive teacher. Von Rad aligned himself with the Confessing Church against Nazi ideology (along with people like Bonhoeffer, Niemoller, and Barth). He opposed anti-Semitic readings of the Hebrew Bible. He emphasized Deuteronomy as a book of grace. Von Rad took Gunkel's work in a new direction, being interested in the final form, the written form, of the Hexateuch. He sought a theory about the stages of its writing and the faith of Israel as it changed through the various stages along the way. Von Rad theorized that one layer was a "settlement tradition" about the occupation of the land and an entirely separate "Sinai tradition" formed. These two traditions were combined in ways that lead to many of the noticeable discrepancies in the text. The J author did most of the heavy lifting in von Rad's view, putting the traditions together near the time of Solomon and making the patriarchal stories fit into the final form. His theory was able to see the final form of the Hexateuch (and the Hebrew Bible) as a movement from promise to fulfillment with an openness to the future that left room for Christ. Von Rad's work can be seen as a powerful rewriting of the history of Israel counter to Wellhausen's ideas.

William Foxwell Albright (1891-1971) might be seen as the "dean of biblical archaeologists" and would perhaps be the most religiously conservative of all the scholars mentioned. His genius is undoubtable. Unfortunately, his theory was flawed. What he sought -- a confirmation in the record of Near Eastern and Palestinian archaeology that the history of the Bible is essentially factual -- by means of the comparative method (comparing Bible texts with archaeology and Near Eastern texts) has not been demonstrated. Albright expected the spade to confirm the book. In his lifetime, he thought in many ways it did. Few of his conclusions are widely believed anymore. In terms of technical contribution, however, Albright is unparalleled. He developed the field of ceramic typology (locating styles of pottery in various eras and cultures to date archaeological layers) to a high level of precision and his rules of pottery typing are still the norm today. He knew the biblical history was not accurate in all details but sought to prove its essential truth in the "verifiable data" of archaeology. His critics afterward recognized that remains dug up from the ground are just as subject to interpretation as words on a page. Much of the value of archaeology is actually to illustrate, not to prove anything. It seems that Albright located the authority of the Bible in the events themselves more than the text.

Finally, Brevard Childs (1923-2007) is perhaps the last paradigm changer of the period of modern biblical studies (as opposed to post-modern biblical studies, which is still relatively young). The primary paradigm he changed with his canonical approach is to assert that the final form of the Bible as received by Judaism and Christianity as scripture is where divine authority lies. Childs accepts the basic results of critical study of the Hebrew Bible (and New Testament), but confesses faith in the message of the final text. There is no need to isolate layers other than in assisting with interpretation of the final form. The word "canon" or measure refers to the corpus of texts accepted as scripture in Judaism and/or Christianity. Childs affirmed both academic (critical) study and confessional (reading it as scripture) reading as necessary and compatible. Childs studied many fields, including rabbinics and patristics, and was widely learned in numerous fields he believed would aid his exegesis of scripture. His canonical approach ran counter to the tendencies of the scholarly world and yet his work was deemed important because he had clearly mastered the material. He saw the critical study and its tendency to divide scripture into historical layers as providing a sense of the depth of scripture while the final form is what gave it meaning. He believed in the idea of writers and editors have an intention in writing which could possibly be discovered (so he would not agree with reader-response approaches in post-modern studies). He saw God's hand working in the many generations who received the traditions that ended up in scripture, revised them, passed them down for other generations to revise and also pass on, up until the final form. It is the shape they ended with, not the shape they began with, that makes them scripture.

What I find to be the greatest strength of Gignilliat's A Brief History of Old Testament Criticism is its ability to summarize complex ideas, get at essential points, and from the point of view of faith-based and yet critical readers, to evaluate the thinkers and ideas that most shaped modern study of the Hebrew Bible. Gignilliat does not address the more recent post-modern approaches. Yet for the student who wonders who modern ideas about the Bible developed, this is a short (186 pages), readable guide that is a pleasure to read.

A helpful introduction
By Ethan R. Longhenry
An investigation into the history of Old Testament criticism through biographical inquiries into many of the major characters involved: Spinoza, de Wette, Wellhausen, Gunkel, von Rad, Albright, and Childs.

The author admits that his investigation is limited, that he comes about things with a conservative viewpoint and a high esteem for Childs, and that there is plenty more to say about the subject and about other figures involved.

Nevertheless, for a beginner or the interested observer, the book does well at introducing some of the major characters involved in OT criticism, their backgrounds, the ecclesiastical, academic, cultural, and philosophical influences in their lives and how they were guided by those influences and/or reacted against them, the great contributions (for better or worse) of each character, the impact they had on the field, and their enduring legacy to this day.

If you've always been interested in how OT criticism has come to be as it is, and why it places so much emphasis on certain foci, this book will prove very useful and helpful.

A wordy book on an interesting subject
By PL
As the title states, this book is an attempt to overview the history of study of the Old Testament in the modern era. The subject field is huge, so the author did what every wise historian does: he picked a few of the most interesting and helpful samples. The book is divided up into seven chapters, each one devoted to a different theologian or scholar, and bookended with an introduction and conclusion. The seven theologians are: Benedict Spinoza, WML De Wette, Julius Wellhausen, Herman Gunkel, Gerhard Von Rad, WF Albright, and Brevard S Childs. The first half of each chapter is a short biography and the second half is a summary and brief analysis of the scholar's work.

Overall, I have mixed feelings about this book. The biographical portions on each theologian are interesting, enjoyable to read, and provide a helpful context for each writer. The second half of each chapter, the summary and brief analysis of each writer’s work, are a mixed bag. Sometimes Gignilliat shines in this section, for instance when explaining the work of Von Rad or Child’s. At other times, I had difficulty grasping the concepts Gignilliat highlighted in a certain writer’s work, as in the explanation of Spinoza’s understanding of reason, theology, and philosophy. I left that chapter feeling that I couldn’t explain anything new about Spinoza. Certainly part of the difficulty is due to the task, not the writer: attempting to explain and analyse the life work of such important scholars in twenty pages is a significant challenge. However, at times I found Gignilliat’s writing unnecessarily wordy. Sometimes he used a long word where a short one would have done fine (contrary to CS Lewis’s oft-quoted advice!). Again, some allowance should be made for an author explaining technical details of scholarly work (e.g., the difference between Von Rad’s tradition criticism and Gunkel’s form criticism!), but I still felt that the language was overly complex in many places.

I would give this book 2.5 stars, but since that's not an option I rounded up to 3.

Not paint-doku as you know it but great puzzler
By Selah
I purchased this expecting it to be paint-duko with the traditional grids with number clues (nongrams, hanjie). These pinwheel designs are more like solving nurikabe puzzles. Still a visual logic/spatial logic puzzle experience, where you shouldn't have to make blind guesses. But they do require a different mental flexibility than nonograms.

You start off with a blank grid with white and black dots scattered across the puzzle. The rules are simple: each dot is a center of a rotationally symmetrical piece of any number of blocks in size. You begin drawing in the boundaries that are most obvious, and continue reworking different sections of the puzzle until you have enough logical information to complete the board. I found it helpful to use a single cross hatch through boxes occupied by white pieces so it's easier to tell resolved versus unresolved spaces.

I'm attaching a picture of one of the early/simpler puzzles that shows a puzzle near completion. I've let my pencil point at a large pinwheel design that hasn't been filled in yet just to show you how large and complex the pinwheels can be. You can also see what parts of the puzzle are unresolved because they are blank without set boundaries.

So, while this was purchased in error, I am very glad I did. I would buy more puzzles like this in the future. This company has made good designs, on good paper, with spiral binding, for very affordable prices. I can't complain at all. I will say my only difficulty with these puzzles is that it is much harder to check your answers/a portion of the puzzle against the answers in the back just because of the puzzle design. There aren't thick grid lines every 5 lines like most nonograms to help you find your spot. (I recommend taking a picture of the answer on your phone/tablet and then zooming in to see better). So pencils not pens for these. Also notice that the last few puzzles in each section of puzzle sizes get very difficult, so if you hit a wall, skip ahead to the next size of puzzles and you'll be back in puzzles you can solve. But try them.

Another Great Addition to the Conceptis Paint-Doku Puzzle Book Family
By Kristine Passons
I bought this book because I love Conceptis puzzles; I do not think that they have published one puzzle book that I have not purchased more than once and enjoyed every time. Because this was a new style of puzzle, I honestly let it sit in a drawer for about a month after I bought it. When I finally tried it, I messed up A LOT --- I used the instructions (which I NEVER do as I am do-er not a reader-er when it comes to things like this) and finally got the hang of it about 5 small puzzles in. Once I understood the way to solve it, puzzles got easier and easier to actually complete and the errors got fewer and fewer between. Once I got the hang of it, I absolutely LOVE these puzzles. They are very different from the Paint-Doku that I normally buy (and have bought 10+ of each Paint-Doku book I can find at a minimum) and LOVE but in a very interesting and fun way. It was a nice change of pace to try something new that still requires concentration, logic, and problem solving. The puzzles range from quite simple to difficult, though none are impossible or so difficult it is frustrating. The pictures that you make are cute and interesting as well, not so boring as some of the early Conceptis Paint-Doku books were. Overall, I highly recommend Pinwheel Paint-Doku to ALL original Paint-Doku fans, Conceptis fans, and in general for those that enjoy a little difficulty and problem solving in their puzzle books or those who are new to Paint-Doku and just want something to try out.

The Difficult Gentleman, by Hugo von Hofmannsthal

Hugo von Hofmannsthal's play "Der Schwierige" opened in 1921 at a time of great change and uncertainty in both Austria and Germany. A work that is light-hearted, comic and thought-provoking, its affectionate portrayal of the Austrian nobility is an enduring vignette of the bygone age of the Viennese salon. Its central character, the Count Kari Buehl, is "the difficult gentleman," both seeking and running away from love, caught between action and inaction and forever undecided. The play questions the value of words in true expression and the nature of communication in society - the misunderstandings that ensue are a pleasure to behold.

The play has been newly translated from the German into English by Nicholas Stephens. Nicholas graduated in Modern Languages from the University of Oxford, and currently lives in Hong Kong.

I can comfortably say that this agile and masterful "rewrite" of Hugo ...
By Owena Hu
It would be inappropriate for me to judge how accurate and faithful this translation is to the original. There are very few English translations of the play available for me to make comparisons, and my knowledge about the German language still remains at counting from one to ten. However, as it may always be the case that a work translated is written twice, I can comfortably say that this agile and masterful "rewrite" of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's Der Schwierige by Nicholas Stephens is a wonderful must-read if you are interested in plays, German literature, comedies, or simply a nice afternoon sipping coffee and bonding with your sofa. Stephens' fluent and Wodehouse-like choice of words gives every character a fitting voice so lively that one finds it difficult not to read out. It is a merit to the translator that this classical masterpiece created almost a century ago could still read so smooth, arresting and relevant, enticing laughter, tears, as well as some contemplations about what kindness, loyalty, faith, love, family and relationships are meant to be.

It is almost impossible to read this without having many favourite lines to quote. One of my favourites always is: "Lukas, switch it off! I don't like this indiscreet machine. Lukas!"

Great ideas, boiled down to the essence
By Bob Kraft
I was surprised to find that this book was a collection of ideas with little elaboration. However, the ideas are classic and mostly self-explanatory.

This is a short book that should be read repeatedly. The author has spent a lifetime in advertising and marketing and knows what matters most.

Bravo
By David Sheehan
Even the strongest brands need ongoing work and fine tuning. Mr. DeWree's 50 Essential Rules of Great Branding is an effective, practical and handy brand building guide. The power behind this book is in its beautiful simplicity. This book is a fresh departure from the many books on marketing plans and branding that are cumbersome and lengthy thus not regularly used. This book can be used as a powerful daily reference guide to new ideas and inspiration to build any brand and business.

Best crash course on branding. Ever.
By Balazs Borbely de Roff
Even if you are a slow reader, your coffee will most likely stay hot while you consume this gem. It will not turn you into a branding expert, but may either inspire you to knuckle down and become one, or at least you will recognise and appreciate the real McCoy from now on. The book is only for smart cookies with elegant tastes, of course.

Helpful, but not outstanding
By David Lance Clark
I found this commentary very helpful, but like many modern commentaries it is almost written from a "History of Religions" perspective. This may come as a surprise given the fact that it is a Jewish commentary. But I did not find the "rich" exegesis that I would have expected. Granted, many parts of Deuteronomy are straight-forward and don't require extensive exegesis, but I definitely expected more on structure. Also, I didn't see where Tigay developed the "themes" and motifs of Deuteronomy even as well as say a Daniel Block. On a positive note, I found his excursus and appendix material to be very helpful. And by in large from text to text I think he does a fine job in locating and unpacking the major theme. I cannot highly recommend this purchase given the price. I think your money is better spent elsewhere.

Deuteronomy in Depth
By Mona B.
So far as I am aware, The JPS Torah Commentary: Deuteronomy (Jeffrey Tigay, JPS, 1996) is the most comprehensive and detailed commentary ever published on Deuteronomy in English. It is close to 600 pages, and provides many levels of material. The primary material is the verse-by verse commentary, and I would estimate close to 90% of the verses have commentary. In many, many cases, numerous individual words or phrases have their own commentary, so sometimes 4 or 5 or 6 separate comments appear on a single verse. These sometimes provide connections to other verses, especially outside Deuteronomy, and regularly give the literal reading of idioms that have been translated non-literally, and provide discussion of difficult words. Other verse comments covers small sections of verse, in effect providing comments on a small block of several verses which form part of a larger section. In addition, there are dozens of introductory pieces for sections of law or other themes. For example in Chapter 15, "Remission of Debts (vv. 1-6)" gives a detailed background, presenting comparison to Mesopotamian and Greek practices, references to the topic in other Books in the Bible, and a discussion of what is not included in the text. These commonly allow the author to view the subject as a whole, explain the purpose and structure of the section, give some historical development into later time periods, provide contrast to other legal codes, explain how this section has been converted into Halakha, and introduce the views of classic commentators, such as Josephus or Maimonides.
Another section of the book is the collection of 33 Excursuses, covering 100 pages. Some are essays on specific things, such as The Shema and Levirite Marriage. Others are more comprehensive, such as "Historical Geography of Deuteronomy", which collects and identifies all the place names, and "The Concept of War in Deuteronomy". Some are extended analysis on a small section, such as "Improper Intervention in a Fight, (25:11-12)".
Next are the footnotes --- close to 100 pages of fine print. Most are on the verse commentaries --- in some cases, more than 100 footnotes on a single chapter's commentary. These provide much more than source citations. There are minority viewpoints, nuances about the translations, punctuation and vocalizations, midrashic treatments, and all manner of side-comments, fine distinctions and exotica.
Nor is this the end of the treasures. There is a comprehensive introductory essay, describing its themes, dating the book, setting forth its role in Jewish tradition and more. There is also a fine glossary and 6 maps.
Even if you never need such depth, it's worth a look just to marvel at how closely Deuteronomy can be examined.

People of any faith who view the Bible as infallible Scripture will not be happy with the views expressed by the author

A Profound and we'll researched modern analysis of the fifth book of the Hebrew Bible. It will appeal to those who view the Bible as literature. People of any faith who view the Bible as infallible Scripture will not be happy with the views expressed by the author, however.

Solid Mid-Tier Book (No changes since last edition)
By GMAT Club (Expert)
If you are new to the GMAT and looking for a quicker prep plan, Kaplan Premier is a good book to work with - it provides a good intro to the test (explains the mechanics, basic principles, gets you familiar with the test structure, etc), has solid strategies that you can use regardless of your level, and finally, comes with 5 Adaptive tests. Think of it a starter camera/computer/car/etc - you don't want to start with anything expensive before you know what you are looking for. On the flip side, this book will last you for 3-4 weeks and most likely will only boost your score by 50-75 points. If you want a greater increase (and have 3 months to study, skip this book and pick a bigger caliber package from Manhattan GMAT or Veritas Prep that have a comprehensive overview of everything GMAT-related).

~~~ THE GOOD: ~~~
* Quite a few practice questions
* Solid material with proven Math and Verbal strategies as well as formulas/etc background
* 49 pages covering Integrated Reasoning
* 6 Full GMAT Tests (5 are in adaptive CAT format on the online and 1 is in a paper format in the book)
* Online practice with additional exercises and quizzes - 18 online drills
* Much of general info on gmat has been moved into online video format, called Fast Fact Videos; that helps with learning when you have had too much reading for the day
* Great value for the money with 6 Full GMAT tests, practice questions, and many online Quizzes
* Good amount of coverage for the INTEGRATED REASONING.
~~~ THE BAD: ~~~
* Errors - I have spotted a few typos and issues with explanations; I suspect there may be a few more
* Access to the online components expires after 6 months. This is the only reason to buy a new book vs used
* NO CD/DVD - online content only for Tests
* Does not have the depth and width a 700+ score requires
* 1,100 Pages and 6 LBS! - not a travel size book

~~~ OTHER STUDY OPTIONS & BOOKS ~~~
Many applicants, bypass Kaplan Premier completely and head straight for the more specialized books such as the Manhattan GMAT Set of 8 Strategy Guides, Fourth Edition OR Complete GMAT Course Set - 15 Book. These book sets come with 8-15 books that are targeting specific Math and Verbal areas. You have a much better chance getting a 700+ with those book sets (not guaranteed) but they also do require at least 2.5-3 months to cover them. The MGMAT Books come with 6 adaptive online tests. Veritas Prep books come with tests as well BUT only if you purchase from their website (Ugh) Finally, a book you should also now about is the The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 13th Edition (more on that is below)
~~~ SOME OTHER THOUGHTS: ~~~
* What is a good study plan using Kaplan Premier?
My recommendation would be to start with this book, finish it in about a month or so (by this time you will learn all the basics about the test, how it works, what is tested, and general strategies for answering questions). Then, you an figure out what's the best use of your time - you may have reached your target score and can stop or perhaps you are really lacking in Quant or Verbal and need a lot more serious practice.

* Will this book give me 700+ score?
For the majority of applicants, No. It is not deep enough for most people out of college to refresh the math and verbal fundamentals. You will most likely need other books to help you get there.

* How do I get 700 then?
There are several options:
1. Review each section separately using the Kaplan GMAT Math Workbook and Kaplan GMAT Verbal Workbook
2. Thorough/Methodical review of each area - If you have a bit more time, grab the Manhattan GMAT Set of 8 Strategy Guides, Fifth Edition OR Complete GMAT Course Set by Veritas - 15 Book. These books are excellent and are actually used in the classroom setting for their classes, so you are definitely get the top books. If you dont need/want the entire collection, see my review for what stand-alone books to get. This plan is likely to get you a higher score with this section but it will also take up more time (about a month more). Decide on the approach based on your starting position, target score, time you have, and willingness to study math and grammar for months without a break.

* Any other books I need to know about?
YES. There is one - The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 13th Edition. This book is published by the creators of GMAT and contains real GMAT questions. You should also download the Official GMAT Prep software from GMAC's website (it's free).

* What if I have trouble getting through this book? Where can I find help?
There are several books that can help you get up to speed with quant and grammar:
1. For Quantitative section: Manhattan GMAT Foundations of GMAT Math
2. For Verbal Section: Foundations of GMAT Verbal by Manhattan GMAT

Let me know if you have any questions about the book - I reply to comments!

Scored 730 composite with perfect AWA/IR scores!
By Jim
I highly recommend this book to everybody interested in taking the GMAT. It helped me beat my target score without buying crazy expensive study materials. When I decided to start studying for the GMAT, I took a diagnostic CAT from the GMAT website and scored a 580, which is pretty mediocre. I ran to a brick and mortar book store and picked up the 2015 revision of this book (I took the GMAT in 2015, nothing really changed from 14 to 15 to 16) and began to study. On test day, I ended up getting a 730 composite, having used this book and the free Kaplan daily email questions exclusively.

This book does an excellent job of explaining the test, which is pretty unconventional if you're used to traditional college mid-terms and finals. Understanding the question types and getting an idea of the strategies for solving them to save time for the harder questions is crucial to doing well. The example questions and mini-practice sections are explained clearly to grasp the concept right off the bat.

I suggest:
-3 months at 1-2 hours/day with this book. Shorter and you might get burnt out, but much longer than 3 months and you'll start to forget the stuff from the beginning.
-Periodically take the online quizzes for review.
-Alternate studying between verbal and quant chapters to stay fresh.
-Take one of the practice test on day 1, and 1 every ~3 weeks to gauge progress and get used to sitting for a 4 hour exam. There are 6 in this book and several available for free online. The tests in this book seemed to be slightly harder than the actual exam.
-Register for the free Kaplan daily email questions. These are a great way to practice and FREE.
-Keep momentum up when studying, follow the books strategies, and you'll be set.

Review
Comprehensive is the word. Flick presents forms of theory in addition to kinds of research design and types of data collection methods. The message is that ideas and arguments are as important as techniques. The emphasis on both understanding and how-to-do is refreshing. The book is a splendid introduction for any and all planning to conduct qualitative research.

(Jaber F. Gubrium 2013-10-17)

Uwe Flick’s book has been one of the best books around for introducing students and early-career researchers to qualitative research. With this fifth edition, the book will be very hard to beat in terms of comprehensiveness, clarity of writing, layout, use of examples, and drawing on personal experience of the qualitative research process. I strongly recommend it to lecturers and students alike as a well-crafted and highly instructive Introduction to Qualitative Research. (Alan Bryman, Professor of Organisational and Social Research 2013-10-17)

The fifth edition of Uwe Flick's Introduction to Qualitative Research remains the most comprehensive and thorough text in qualitative research. It is student-and user-friendly, thoroughly up-to-date in terms of the latest developments in the field, imminently practical. it is the single most important introductory book on qualitative inquiry in the social sciences today. (Norman K. Denzin 2013-10-17)

This is a very useful book which I will be recommending to all of our MSc/DBA students around the time of their qualitative methods workshop. It covers the domain of qualitative research comprehensively and is very well written and easy to follow. (Dr. Claire Collins Inspection Copy Feedback)

Good Basic Intro to Qualitative Research

A good overview. A bit basic in some areas, but easily understood by undergraduate level. Nice introductions to qualitative theory, even if biased a bit from the German perspective.

Want to take something interesting and present it in an excessively redundant and dry manner then this is the book for you. The number of times this book makes a claim to the effect of "your question should drive you method decisions" is outrageous and the entirety of this book could be reduced to about 40 pages without leaving much out. This book lacks specific example development and decontextualized so much of its advice from a practical setting the reader is left bored to tears.
