About the Author
Ben Chenoweth lived in St. Petersburg, Russia with his wife and two children for almost ten years. He currently lives in Melbourne, Australia where he works at the Melbourne School of Theology as their eLearning Coordinator. He enjoys reading, writing, music and playing computer games in equal measures. He has a particular interest in the intersection between theology and the arts.
His first novel, Meeting of Minds, dealt with exploring the galaxy through virtual reality. Later, he wrote a play based on the life of Saul entitled Saul, First King of Israel. His most recent novel, The Ephesus Scroll concerns the discovery in Russia of an ancient scroll of the book of Revelation. He also wrote a musical based on the Biblical book of Esther (a free download of the 1998 performance at Lilydale Baptist Church is available on NoiseTrade).

A Cyberpunk's Guide to the Galaxy

Meeting of Minds (MOM) is the name of a virtual reality environment designed for meetings and conferences over a long distance. Dave and Ruth are the developers who have put it together and are launching it as a business. Jon is a friend, a professor in Astrophysics at the local university, who has been given a tour of the virtual facility. A business idea with a future; so far, so good -- but there's more...
Andy is a hacker, not by choice, but because one of his professors, Dr. Werner, caught him in one of his first attempts. Where he ought to have had him expelled, he instead uses him for his dirty work with the promise of a degree later on. His next assignment, spy on MOM. So far, it looks like corporate espionage, but there's still more...
At the local SETI radio telescope, an obviously intelligent message arrives in trinary code from a nearby star system. As you'd expect, they keep a tight lid on in, all except for Tim, a lab technician, who sends a copy of the message to his friend, Jon. Jon takes it to his friends Dave and Ruth, to see if they can decipher it. Something like this would take a human a lifetime to complete, so they take one of their old projects off the shelf. It's a procedure for creating a virtual clone -- an artificial intelligence -- by means of a brain dump. They download the contents of Dave's brain, so the computer AI will have the same programming know-how, leveraged by computer power, so that he can do in one week, what it would take his human counterpart several lifetimes. It also inherits Dave's quirky sense of humour. Just so they don't mix the two up, they call the human Dave as they're used to, and the AI, David.
"David" completes the job in a week, but not before Andy installs his spyware. The "message" is actually a four dimensional environment in which humans can interact with alien civilisations. And it can interface with MOM.
Now that's the scenario as we have it at the middle of part 1. And on it goes into a thoroughly engrossing tale that you might describe as Douglas Adams in Cyberpunk mode.
