Pianist Arthur Rubinstein (1887-1982), apart from being a world-renowned performer for more than 65 years, also wrote a bestselling autobiography, My Young Years. For decades people who were fortunate enough to see and hear esteemed pianist Artur Rubinstein (1887-1982) perform left concert halls spellbound. Rubinstein went for the soul of the audience as he wrapped his soaring and spirited playing around each listener. His magnificent interpretation of Chopin remains without equal. Biographer and music historian Sachs (Toscanini, LJ 11/1/78; Music in Fascist Italy, Norton, 1988. o.p.) first heard Rubinstein play in 1959, but it was not until 1986 that he seriously considered writing a biography of Rubinstein. Not having primary source material from the musician's first 53 years was an obstacle (Rubenstein's papers were destroyed or lost when the Germans occupied his house during the war), but Sachs had the full cooperation of Rubinstein's wife, Nela, and access to a huge amount of source material that had accumulated after the Rubinsteins came to the United States. Since in his memoirs (My Young Years, LJ 2/15/73. o.p., and My Many Years, LJ 1/15/80. o.p.) Rubinstein occasionally changed some dates and facts, Sachs realized an added necessity of thoroughness in his research. The resultant biography is definitive and belongs on the shelf alongside those memoirs. Recommended for music collections in both public and academic libraries.

Sachs' biography of Arthur Rubinstein (1887-1982) reveals him as generous, philandering, insecure, always seeking adoration, and the quintessential interpreter of nineteenth-and early-twentieth-century piano music. Born to Jewish parents in Lodz, Poland, Rubinstein was "abandoned" by them at 12, when he was sent to Berlin to study. He quit that five years later to embark on a world-wide career. Never a technician, Rubinstein concentrated on the emotion expressed by the music he played. He gained energy from being with other people, telling stories, playing music, and sight-seeing. Later, he coached younger pianists and promoted the careers of many. Although Sachs includes critical reviews of Rubinstein's recordings and a discography, he concentrates on Rubinstein's love affairs and relations with his family and friends, pointing out where the facts differ from Rubinstein's memoirs and arguably detracting some from his well-written biography's intimate exploration of Rubinstein, the man behind the music. Arthur Rubinstein (1887-1982) was a complicated man. His two-volume autobiography was an interesting read, but only revealed the portions of the pianist's life which he wanted known, was filled with numerous omissions and errors, contained a great deal of petty score settling (his comments about Heifetz, Schnabel and Horowitz were especially cutting), and remarkably little discussion of music.
Harvey Sachs, whose acclaimed biography of Arturo Toscanini is required reading for all musicians, has produced a meticulously researched and balanced look at the pianist's life and music.
As Sachs recounts Rubinstein's unusual childhood and early musical progress, it's clear that the pianist's early years (he left his parents before adolescence) set a pattern of devotion and abandonment which would scar his entire life.
Rubinstein had difficult relations with his entire family, particularly his wife and children. His eldest son had no communication with his father from 1969 onward, and in 1976, at the age of 89, Rubinstein left Nela, his wife of 44 years, for a woman young enough to be his granddaughter. In a sense, Rubinstein considered his adoring public to be his family, and when his biological family was not equally adoring, the pianist's reaction could be volcanic (he once loudly castigated his son, Paul--who was ill--for dozing in the green room during one of his concerts). The book reveals a man who was fundamentally generous (in 1960, he gave a series of ten recitals entirely for charity), but highly insecure, obsessed with position, and always needing to be at the center of attention-onstage or off.
Sachs has reconciled the frequent errors in Rubinstein's memoirs with regard to names, dates, and events. He also interviewed nearly everyone still alive who knew Rubinstein. The tangled story of Rubinstein's affair with Annabelle Whitestone, which lasted until his death, is handled with fairness and sympathy toward all parties.
Musicians and Rubinstein fans will find Donald Manildi's discography very useful-especially as the complete Rubinstein recordings have now been reissued by RCA. Sachs is a knowledgeable musician, but he occasionally lets his biases creep into his appraisal of Rubinstein's recorded legacy. He is notably critical of Rubinstein's Beethoven on several fronts, but the gist of his complaints is that the pianist didn't play it the way Toscanini conducted it. For the most part, however, Sachs' comments on Rubinstein's recordings are noted for their fairness, clarity, and objectivity.
On the whole, Harvey Sachs has done an excellent job of recounting Rubinstein's long and eventful life. As with his biography of Toscanini, this book should be read by anyone who loves great music or has ever bought a Rubinstein recording.

Brilliant on Rubinstein's connection with Brazil and Villa-

I would like to contact the author, as am presently effecting a research on Villa-Lobos, and not-at this stage- write a review. I believe there are a few minor mistakes with respect to brazilian personalities (eg the brazilian pianist Antonieta Rudge had no connection whatsoever with Pound's friend, the american violinist Olga Rudge) , and precisions with respect to dates, programs of Rubinstein's concerts in the 1920s, which I believe could be of interest to the author. I found the book fascinating, and would very much benefit from the possibility of discussing some points with the author.

Searching for Peace in an Expanded Horizon

This is a beautiful story of 5 people searching for the inner peace that has eluded them throughout much, if not all, of their lives. The cause of their inner turmoil comes from a variety of sources but their emptiness and incompleteness is very real. Shusaku Endo introduces us to each of them seperately and then has them all, for seperate reasons, journey to India. They are in a guided tour that will supposedly show them a number of Buddhist shrines and historical sites. Their trip leads them to the Ganges River where they initially off at and then are all drawn to its' sacredness. The author gives us a serene glimpse of a sort of peace descending upon the 5 pilgrims. It may not be the peace they sought or would recognize, but it seems to be the peace they needed.

Shusaku Endo is a Japanese Christian who writes challengely about his own faith. To me, the core of his message in "Deep River" is the universal nature of faith and the universal nature of God. He exists for all of us but we come to know Him through the religion of our culture. Thus the Hindus, Christians, Moslems, Buddhists, etc are all seeking the same ultimate oneness with God (i.e.; peace) but they are each traveling different paths outlined through them in a theology passed along through the millennia. To illustrate his point, Endu shows us the five seperate tales of redemption and has them all come to salvation at a Hindu holy site. God DOES work in mysterious ways.

A Rejuvenating Spiritual Experience

Reading this novel by Shusaku Endo was a great experience, a spiritual experience to be precise. It is like a pilgrimage to the holy river Ganges which Christians should consider pagan and unchristian. Besides, the filth, pollution and the unhygienic surroundings are all there. But there is a surrounding aura of love, peace and regeneration. Ganges, the Mother of India despite all filth, is a mother with plenitude and gentleness. This novel is the story of a group of Japanese tourists to India. The various characters are brought to light in the background of the teeming life and activity around Ganges in the city of Varanasi. Each character has a past that is heavy on the person. The river Ganges called 'the river of humanity' and 'the river of love' has a great depth of meaning for each one of them. It is indeed a deep river from which they all gain consolation, liberation and a new birth. The characters like Isobe, Kiguchi, Numanda, Mitsuko and Otsu vary in their backgrounds and interests. Most of them do not have much in common except for Mitsuko and Otsu. Each of them has a story and their lives do not cross much. The plot of the novel in this respect is most unusual. All of them converge on the banks of river Ganges in pursuit of rejuvenation.
India, where the ancient civilization flowered on the banks of the great river Indus, serves as the backdrop for the novel. Most of the events take place in Varanasi, on the banks of the river Ganges in the months of October-November 1984. The dark forests, the natural environment, the peaceful temples with their gods and godesses, the lively idols of Kali and Chamunda, the crowded city of Varanasi, the various river ghats of Ganges with all the droppings of dogs and cows and the filth, the cremation ground with the smell of burning flesh, the river itself with milky tea-colored water, and the dusty isolated villages with communal wells become very lively to the reader. The band of scrawny children crying out for Bakshish, the snake charmer with the cobra and the mongoose, the sadhoos and godmen giving blessings to the devotees, the wedding procession of the rich couple in the holy city are fit to create strong impressions in the mind. The political background of the time, such as the assassination of Indira Gandhi the prime minister and the subsequent riots in New Delhi, the funeral and the immersion of her ashes in the river Yamuna are clearly brought out. Endo has a deep knowledge of India, its people and their ways of thinking.
Shusaku Endo is known as the Graham Greene of the East. But, though his novels can be considered Catholic, they are controversial. His deep knowledge of Christianity in the West and in the East makes it easy for him to write very powerfully. His earlier novels dealt with problems of faith and God, of sin and betrayal, of martyrdom and apostacy in Japan. The present novel seems to focus mainly on the depth of the spirituality of the East which the western mind fails to comprehend. The pictures he paints of the gods and goddesses and the river are often disgusting and disturbing. It is these that offer consolation to the seminarian who is disappointed with the western Christianity, to the non believer like Mitsuko and to a host of others tormented by their own personal problems.

Practical, hands-on advice.

This is a great little book! Having read the first few pages, I was already excited about the possibilities of buying gold in the way Daniel outlines, and later covers in-depth.
After reading the book I ended up online checking out gold prices, gold testing kits and more - he has certainly triggered my imagination.
The book is very thorough, and has links to many resources.
Well worth the (tiny) price.

Excellent beginners book

Excellent informative book on buying and selling gold for the beginner. If you want to know the 'secret' behind this business this is the book for you. Of course, there is no real secret but it would take a lot of footwork to put this information together yourself. A great shortcut to getting started.

First Kindle purchase...and boy was I disappointed. I'm surprised Kindle/Amazon even accepted this worthless effort, for sale. I only paid $2.99 for it...but it was like eating a kid's burger at McDonalds. There just wasn't much to chew between the tiny bun.

A Good Reference to Have

As mentioned in the introduction to the text, this book is not for professional designers. This book is intended for those of us who need to put together a flyer, presentation, or newsletter, but we don't have the background in design. The design the author refers to is the design of the printed page.
The author explains simple principles that help us see what makes for a good design like proximity, alignment, repetition, and contrast. There are plenty of before-and-after examples to show you exactly what she means. The explanations are also very understandable. Williams does not preach to you, but rather helps you see the different elements which can make the visual more effective.
There are also some quizzes with answers in the back. Included is a short bibliography so the reader can get more information if he or she chooses.
There are some problems with the book. One, it discusses the use of color, but there are no color pictures to illustrate the point. The author knew the illustrations would no be color so asks you to visualize this in your head. It wasn't the most helpful here.
Also, towards the end, she uses some editing/printing jargon that she never explains. If the reader does not have a design background, why mention leading if not explained?
Overall, I find this book to be very helpful. Knowing the elements I should be looking for ensures that my experimenting with flyers is more productive and effective. I would recommend this book to anyone needing to create newsletters, flyers, and the like.

Sensible and Practical Advice for Layout and Typography

Robin Williams provides a practical introduction to the classical principles of design in this pamphlet-sized book. Her discussion of layout is organized around four basic design principles: Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity. Each is presented in its own chapter with plenty of you-can-do-it-at-home examples. The typography section explains the principles of Concord, Conflict and Contrast, based on Williams'classification of type faces by style (Oldstyle, Modern, Slab Serif, Sans Serif, Script and Decorative), weight (Light, Bold), Shape (Narrow, Wide), and spacing. A discussion of color is notably absent; the roots of this book in early grayscale Macintosh computing show through.
Williams's book should hit the mark for amateurs creating one-page designs such as simple web sites, brochures or business cards. Set aside an hour or two to read it and do the exercises, and your designs should improve immensely. Mine have.

Read this book before you publish anything!

If you pick up this book looking for that on-the-edge-physical comedy that made Robin Williams one of the worlds most famous comedians, boy have you got the wrong Robin Williams! This author is one of the leading authorities on visual design and presents her information in a clear, concise, no-nonsense (well almost)kind of way. Her book is a valuable resource even for people who think they are familiar with aspects of design or have been told that they, "have a good eye," so don't be dissuaded by the title. As an experienced journalist, the book brought back a lot of my earlier newspaper layout training. It put into plain language the principles for which I had no name other than, "that just doesn't look right." The principles of proximity, alignment, repetition, and contrast are highlighted and expounded upon in each section. I found the section on typography to be extremely interesting and I find myself looking for examples of contrasting type all around me now.
Visual examples of weak design and what can be done to make the design better are on nearly every page, and make the subject matter very clear. The author maintains that most beginning mistakes in design are tied to mistakes in Contrast Repetition, Alignment, or Proximity (C.R.A.P). That sounds about right. If you are going to publish any document (print or electronic) this should be the first book you read before you do.
