Good content but horrendous format

The content of this book is solid. The information is all current to the IRC and there are lots of helpful illustrations. The problem is that the book looks like it was formatted by a 5th grader for her art project. There are a dizzying amount of colors, fonts, graphic excess, side bars, boxes, icons, etc used on each page. Apparently things are highlighted according to educational STEM (science, engineering, technology, & math). So each mention of something related to S, T, E or M is color coded.

This is definitely not a professional reference book. A good portion of the content is grade school type tangents such as this blurb along side the section on lumber grades: "Life Science: Green plants make their own food. Through photosynthesis, glucose...is formed....where does the sugar go? Starting Hint: Sugar is food." And each section has vocabulary sections, critical thinking exercises, standardized test practice, etc.

This is a serious reference book dressed up as a child's text book which makes it very annoying to use. Save your eyeballs and buy one of the earlier non-student versions.

Good book for passing BLD exam

This book helped me pass the BLD tech exam for Virginia. If you are taking the exam my advice is to actually read this book. I made the mistake of thinking I could flip through it and get the answers I needed to pass the exam since it was open book.

This book is full of detailed color photos covering disassembly, assembly and repairs. Also contains many tips. Author tells where you can get services performed and who makes good reproduction parts. Even if your not restoring a pan you will find this book interesting.

Easy to follow solutions manual

I bought this solutions manual to accompany the book. It covers most of the word and mathematical problems in the textbook. The solutions manual solves the problems and explains the solutions in a very easy to follow manner. The only "issue" is that it seems like the text and solutions manual were written by two diffrent people and solve problems using diffrent approaches. It shouldn't be a problem for anyone that has some finance courses under their belt.

A critical resource that could be better

I suspect that every student in a University options and derivatives course will purchase this book. I did and I am glad that I did. Very few people will be able to learn a complex topic like options and derivatives without doing problems. This solutions manual provides some sign posts to understanding how to solve the problems and gives the correct answer.

When it comes to complex mathematical derivation, however, this book leaves something to be desired. I suppose that this may be good for University instructors who assign problems that are in the solutions manual. Students who simply copy Hull's answers, without the intervening steps, have probably not done the work.

Hull is also a popular resource for people learning options on their own. In this case, the solutions manual may be problematic. I have found it difficult to follow many of Hull's derivations. He shows you the steps, but does not show you how he got from step to step.

An example from a recent homework was problem 11, in Chapter 14, part b. I was able to set up the differential equations, but I was unable to see how to simplify the equation to arrive at the result that Hull gives.

This is a book that virtually everyone who buys Hull's text book will purchase. Especially for those doing self-study, it's too bad that its not more complete.

This is a great resource to go along with the textbook. The questions from the book are reprinted and the manual provides a summary of how to get to the correct answer. I would highly recommend for anyone taking their first class on derivatives as it will significantly cut down on confusion.

In this memoir, co-written by the noted naval historian Paul Stillwell, he describes his life from boyhood in Richmond, Virginia, through his enlisted service on a World War II submarine chaser, to later tours of duty at sea and ashore. Denied housing and even jailed for impersonating an officer, he recounts efforts to overcome both cultural and institutional obstacles of racism. In 2009, the Navy named a guided missile destroyer in his honor.

A tour de force first-person account of the life of Samuel L. Gravely, Jr.

"Trailblazer, The U.S. Navy's First Black Admiral", is a tour de force first-person account of the life of Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. In his youth, he learned well the lessons of Jim Crow in his home-town of Richmond, Virginia. In spite of the various obstacles placed in his path by a narrow-minded society, he went on to become one of the first African Americans to be commissioned as an officer and, ultimately, as the very first African American officer to attain flag rank in the U.S. Navy.

Admiral Gravely tells his story with the help of Paul Stillwell, who is a Navy veteran, editor and author of "The Golden Thirteen: Recollections of the First Black Naval Officers." In the Trailblazer book, we see through Admiral Gravely's eyes and in his voice how he climbed the ladder in the Navy to become the first African American to command a ship, the first to command a fleet, and the first to become an admiral in 1971. His ground-breaking achievements were a tribute to his deeply ingrained strength of character, fiercely dedicated temperament, and dogged perseverance.

Trailblazer also details the personal legacy of Admiral Gravely, the husband and family man, as seen through the eyes of his devoted and loving wife, Alma, including their whirlwind courtship, which lead to their marriage in 1946 - a rich and full union that lasted 58 years - to the death of their beloved older son Robbie in 1978, and finally to Alma's making peace with the certainty of his impending death.

"Sammie," as Alma affectionately referred to the Admiral, very wisely drew from a diverse pool of experiences, as well as from leadership examples provided by his fellow officers, in modeling his own command style during his impressive naval service career. He became THE role model to emulate and set a fine example for thousands of African American naval officers who came after him.

Admiral Gravely poignantly describes one of the more distasteful aspects that made an excruciatingly painful and enduring impression on him during his first duty posting, after his graduation from midshipman school in December 1941. He had returned to Camp Robert Smalls, where he had started his naval service two years earlier, only to find that he was still living in a very clearly segregated world. The naval training station at Great Lakes had quarters for white officers, but not for him. The officer's club was open to white officers, but not to him. To add insult to injury, after he pulled daily watches encompassing the whole camp, he had to return to the distinctly separate "Black camp" each night to sleep. Gravely, regarding this blatant disparity in the service ranks (and society as a whole) as a formidable obstacle, noted, "This was one of the hardest things for me to take of anything that happened to me during my Navy career."

Admiral Gravely always relished and welcomed any and every opportunity for additional training, personal enrichment, and overall challenge of being a part of something new. Continuous educational growth formed the bulwark of his life's mantra. He never knew what he would encounter in the next stage of his life, but he knew for certain what he was leaving behind.
He just wanted to be "a regular sailor."

Trailblazer is an inspiring story about an exceptionally unique barrier-breaking and visionary gentleman, Vice Admiral Samuel L. Gravely, Jr., USN. It is a very humbling regular sailor's account of triumph and growth in the face of adversity and of his awe inspiring legacy to our Nation and our U.S. Navy.

One certainly need not be a fan or student of the military realm to appreciate the dedication and drive of this remarkable man, who overcame, with great courage, grace, and poise, every challenge he faced as the Trailblazer.

I thought I was purchasing Volume 2 but when I got the book I found it was volume 1 which I already had. In the picture it says Volume 1 (which I didn't pay much attention to) and the description says Volume 2. Be sure and pay attention! However, shipment was fast, but now I have 2 volume 1's....

Not the best book. But condition was good.

It was required for my psych class. I don't care for the authors style. Seems quite outdated. I am aware this is an edition older than what is current, but the current book is almost identical, like side by side, the images and words were 95% the same. I wouldn't pay for the new one. I wish that they would have all the definitions at the top of the page for quick access, and more modern images. Just overall disappointed.

The condition of the book however was top notch. So if you have to get this book for your class, I recommend this edition.

This is a great text book. I like how things are broken down into modules, and sub modules, instead of chapters. It makes it easier to focus on the topic being learned and easier to reference back to items.
