About the Author
Emil J. Posavac is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Loyola University of Chicago where he served as director of the Applied Social Psychology Graduate Program and chairman of the Psychology Department. He has published over sixty papers and chapters, edited or co-edited six volumes on program evaluation and applied social psychology, and written numerous evaluation reports for health care and educational institutions. Since retirement he has taught at the University of Rochester (Simon Graduate School of Business), Rochester Institute of Technology, and Trevecca Nazarene University.

Pithy Treatment of a Voluminous Subject

In addition to being a chemist myself who uses programming technologies extensively, I also teach courses designed to introduce relevant software technologies to other chemists, such as programming and database skills.
One of the problems that I faced was lack of a good introductory text on programming that would be relevant to an applied scientist. Most introductory programming books appear to be written for someone who intends to be a computer scientist, or even worse, rather than teaching language-independent skills, they try instead to teach you one programming language. As anyone knows who has ever browsed the computer section of their local bookstore or even here on Amazon, the number of books available on the topic of programming is enormous, to say the least.
I was pleasantly surprised when I came across this book at a local electronics store. For the time being, I am going to refer to it as a good starting point for any scientist who wishes to enhance his/her programming skills.
Barlow and Barnett cover many of the topics that I consider essential when learning any programming language, such as data types, operators, conditional statements, looping constructs, etc. Furthermore, he even covers important concepts like accessing memory (e.g. pointers in C++), state machines, abstraction, and object-oriented techniques. I was very happy to see the authors stress the importance of striving for ANSI compliant code.
For a book that was published in 1998, I was very impressed to see a section on template programming with C++. Clearly, Barlow and Barnett are very good at recognizing emerging trends. Furthermore, they are equally adept at explaining difficult concepts in a lucid way. Towards the end of the book, the authors' physics slant is evident by the section on numerical analysis, but the treatment is great, since it exemplifies how programming can be used for solving computationally intensive tasks that have physical significance.
Although this book on programming is geared towards scientists, it really would serve as a nice introduction to programming for any discipline. Although Fortran's popularity is very low outside of engineering, the juxtaposition of C++ with Fortran was a very nice touch, as it really allows one to look past language specific features in order to see generic programming concepts. Computer languages, like spoken languages, are such that, the first one is hardest to learn, but with each one you learn, the process of learning the next one becomes successively easier, and authors' use of two languages in one book really exemplifies this concept.
This book does not aim to teach you either C++ or Fortran, although it does point out some real pitfalls (e.g. in C++, x = a[i] + i++) in each language. Instead, the authors gives you a great foundation, from which you will be able learn generic programming concepts, as well as evaluate programming languages, so that in the future, you should be able to select one that is appropriate for your task at hand. Finally, they authors give great examples of using programming technologies to solve problems of a scientific nature, and he is able to accomplish in less than 300 pages what most books fail to do in three to four times that amount.

unorthodox but very nice introduction to programming

Intended for first or second year engineering or science students. It teaches programming at an introductory level. Yes, its a text book for one of those Programming 101 courses.
However, what sets this textbook apart from others is that it employs two languages (i.e. Fortran and C++), instead of one, to teach the same old material. And this has some interesting charasteristics. The authors has presented the material in a comparative way so that the student has the chance to see, very clearly, the relative merits of each language. For example, when they introduce arrays you will see the ease of Fortran in dealing with them. On the other hand, when object oriented programming is presented, C++'s superiority becomes apparent for that purpose. By seeing two languages side by side, one can also discern the fundamentals from language specific rules.
I'm familiar with Fortran and it has been a while since I took my first course in programming but this textbook has taught me quite a lot of things. If you know one of the languages, it might still make sense to buy it. You will appreciate your language better and will find what the other language does better. By the way, the book doesn't teach about mixed language programming.

About the Author
Gershon J. Shugar is the author of The Chemist’s Ready Reference Handbook, also published by McGraw-Hill, and professor emeritus of engineering technologies at Essex County College, Newark, New Jersey. In 1947, Dr. Shugar founded a chemical manufacturing business that became the largest exclusive pearlescent pigment manufacturing company in the United States. In 1968, he was appointed assistant professor of chemistry at Rutgers University, where he taught until his appointment at Essex County College. Donald A. Drum is chairman of the technology/natural sciences division of Butler Community College in Butler, Pennsylvania. An expert on hazardous materials, he is a member of the Butler County Hazmat Advisory Team, which has been cited in more than 100 texts and professional and governmental publications. Jack Lauber is section chief of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Division of Air Resources. He is a diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and a Qualified Environmental Professional, certified by the Institute for Professional Environmental Practice. Shari L. Bauman is a research assistant and laboratory technician with the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Minerals Resources.

About the Author
Mr. Patrick Carey received his M.S. in Biostatistics from the University of Wisconsin, where he worked as a researcher designing and analyzing clinical studies. He co-authored his first textbook on using Excel as a statistical tool. Today, Mr. Carey has authored or co-authored more than 20 leading academic and trade texts for the software industry.

An esteemed professional and respected author, Dan Oja, along with June Parsons, purchased an Apple II+ in 1981 and quickly became fluent in BASIC, dBASE II, Lotus 123, WordStar, and a variety of accounting programs. The next year, he and Dr. Parsons opened a successful small computer retail store that offered software instruction to children and adults. With Dr. Parsons, Mr. Oja began writing and creating educational software for Course Technology in 1992. Together, they contributed to the leading success of the Windows for Business and Illustrated Series. They also developed the New Perspectives, e-Course, and Practical series. Relatable, Fun, Humanizing

Thanks to the All Out Show with Jude Angelini for putting me on to the book. Erik weaves a masterful tell of his experience in porn, his trials and tribulations, and his journey to find himself. The book is well written, and addicting to read.

A writer having lived these exploits could easily have filled this work with a surface-level retelling focused ...

Might have benefited from coming to this book with no preconceived ideas, something that's fitting for reading about a person's life. A person doesn't know what's around the corner and from the first pages we're there looking over Knight's shoulder, seeing what he sees and just as destabilized. Even when things seem to be going well, we never know if the next scene will be his first or last. As the industry changes around him, as his body's tolerance grows and his medications double, it's not guaranteed that there will be another call, and that tension persists throughout this *fast* 300 page book. To me reading this book you can begin to understand what a precarious existence he lived, and yet one way or another he manages to thread the needle (pun intended).

A writer having lived these exploits could easily have filled this work with a surface-level retelling focused on the most lurid details, and yes this book has that and yes that's why many fans might choose to pick it from the shelf to buy, but Knight has much more of a story to tell than that. His passion for reflection and literature is clear on each page. You can tell a great deal of effort went into finding the mot juste and that he is drawing on a big reservoir of language and grey matter. This is a work that wasn't written in a hurry, but you can tell these experiences--alternating between joyful, harrowing, revolting, suspenseful, and sometimes all four at once(!), showing how his need for survival took precedence over his ambivalence time and again--have been continuously relitigated in his mind ever since they first happened. In the memoir you're there with him, thinking through all these things with him, weighing different options and then anxiously waiting with him to see what might be the consequences.

The book is very honest, whether channeling his rage and despair or showing the big successes and weaknesses. In a way, it's as much us the leering reader ogling through the window as it is him inviting one to see, and he uses that power dynamic to tell us what he really thinks, like it or not. For the first hundred pages it's difficult for us to know how much he enjoyed any of this. The focus seems to be the paycheck and the girls secondary. Then he'd have these superlatively blissful encounters, rare enough, when he and the person with him are able to break through the clouds and have an ecstatic moment of connection. At those points you're happy and jealous, but then another few pages and this uneasy peace is rent again by turmoil.

While reading this, I was in the midst of preparing for the Army PT test and weigh-in. In such moments you're most aware of how Big Army owns your body and you better do what you must, if only to keep them off your back. As a military musician, however, I was also aware that I was in this position from having made a devil's bargain: I do what I love for a living, all the while knowing there'd always be a fly in the ointment. It'll never be a perfect gig but it's a gig, and many times will come where you hate the parts of the bargain that are so far removed from playing music. Carrying a plastic container to the men's room while a Sergeant watches you pee, all the while knowing that there's no avoiding this. But then you get the moments where the crowd is singing along with you, you and the drummer are locked in and a handful of people are moved to tears. Before accepting the job, I had the thought : you say you'll do anything to be able to play guitar for a living. Well, are you willing to go to war? If you say yes to the first but not to the second, then you were never serious and were only kidding yourself. All of these concerns and themes appeared again in the book as I was living them in my own way in my life, and so that made the book doubly satisfying.

By the end of the book you realize that the book was only nominally about the porn industry, and instead it's a story of being alive.

The journey the author takes you on is real. It's not always pleasant, and is often gut wrenching, but it's about as authentic a literary journey as you are likely to take.

Timelines get woven together in a way that jostles the reader's thinking enough to keep it constantly engaged, wondering how much of this story is an adult talking, and how much of it really comes through the eyes of a frustrated child just trying to get through a day.

This is a triumph for author, industry, and reader. It should be on everyone's reading lists, and they'd better have the stomach for it.

Different then the rest....

I love this book! I love the recipes! I like how it is different from all the other "vegan" books out there; it is a step up. Instead of being called a vegan book it is a "whole-food plant-based" how to book. Vegan books usually contain lots of oil, sugar, salt and mock meats...Julieanna explains why all of these "anti-nutrients" are not good for you and how to get around using them in fun and delicious ways. I love the whole concept of the book. Great job Julieanna! She is an inspiration to me because I was a vegan for five years and fell off the wagon for cheese and now I am back on, thanks to her passion. This book reminded me all of the reasons I went plant-based five years ago and I will be giving this book to loved-ones as a reference because it explains everything you will ever need to know about being an herbivore!

Plant Based Nutrition

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Plant Based Nutrition, by Julieanna Hever is a beautifully written work which explains the importance of healthy eating. The book is designed for people who know little about plant based nutrition, and for those who are fully knowledgeable. The book may be read cover to cover or the reader can pick out items from the Table of Contents which may be of particular interest to them. I went directly to the Super Snacks (wouldn't you just know it?) chapter and really look forward to trying some of those treats. I then turned to the Super Seniors chapter because living a long and healthy life is right about where I am. Every reader will find much of interest in terms what makes us healthy and what drags us down.
Even though the title of this series of books (Idiot's Guide) would lead one to think this book is for the un or undereducated person, it is not. Mrs. Hever has done a wonderful job of presenting evidence to back up all of her positions on diet and health. In Appendix C, she provides nutrition charts which are a scholarly look at the facts regarding plant based nutrition. Anyone who has ever wondered how we really get our protein, or how many vitamins we really need, or what happens to us as we get older will find the answers clearly explained in this book. When you finish reading it you will be very well informed indeed on how to improve your total life style, and just feel better about yourself and how you provide for your family nutritionally speaking. Wonderful Book!!

I bought this book for my wife who is a vegetarian but I felt was not getting a good, broadbased diet with all the nutrients that she needed. This book will teach vegetarians how to eat a healthy diet which is not lacking in required nutrients. I am cutting back on animal products too and this book is so helpful. A must read for any new or existing vegetarians or vegans, or anyone else who would like to explore a plant based diet. Wonderfully written and easy to follow.

Beautiful and straight to the point!

The reviews for these cards are all spot on, but I thought I might add something:

The cards are one sided (the back of every card is the same bird image that graces the cover of the box). The side with the "message" is simple- a few words such as "Lend a Hand", "Accept Love", "Look Forward", "Have Fun", and even "Get over yourself" with a gorgeous image (these cards are SO lovely!) that illustrates the idea. No other words- no explanations, no quotes.

The little book (which is the size of a gift book- very generous) that comes with the cards goes into each card with more depth, but the cards themselves are as simple as can be. Personally, I love this because it means I can read into the card as I need to. But I know some people prefer double-sided cards, or cards that have a little bit of information on the backs sharing insight to their meaning. The illustrations are really outstanding.

I just can't say enough about this deck. It's gorgeous, bright, illuminating, straight forward, and so insightful. The cards themselves are thick, glossy 5" x 3.5 " and feel great in the hand. I "collect" decks, especially the one Hay House puts out (I especially love Power Thought Cards (Beautiful Card Deck) and Wisdom Cards), and this has to be my favorite so far. Beautiful, insightful, doesn't lean in any "spiritual" direction or philosophy. You don't need to be familiar with Sonia Choquette's writing or life approach to be able to fully use these cards.

These cards are perfect for everyone, whether you need just a quick answer to a dilemma, need a creative "push", need some insight into a situation, or just an idea to meditate and focus on. If you want to delve deeper into the meanings of the cards, you can, but if you just want a simple "spark", this is your deck. I'm truly in love with these cards.

Simple maybe, beautiful absolutely!

I got these cards yesterday. I've had many different kinds of oracle cards but these are totally different. As the title says they are simple, clearcut, and wonderfully colorful cards. The colors please the eyes and feel so positive to hold and to use! I was really impressed with the book and the written meanings of each of the cards! I feel like Sonia really meditated and planned each card lovingly and honestly. These are my new favorites!!!

Perfect way to start the day

A friend of mine gifted me with these cards and they have changed my days in great ways. I have since bought 10 or more decks to give to friends of mine.

I am a friend of Tarot cards as well - but these cards are more like Spirit Cards - the message they give lets you know how to check your ego at the door, get it out of your way and get to living life in a real way.

I highly recommend.
