About the Author
Gary Gerani is a screenwriter, author, noted film and TV historian, and children’s product developer. He is best known as the cowriter of the film Pumpkinhead; the author of the book Fantastic Television; and creator, editor, and writer of literally hundreds of Topps trading card sets since 1972. He lives in California.

Robert V. Conte is a pop-culture consultant who, armed with his vast memorabilia collection, utilizes his expertise on a myriad of officially licensed products, including Godzilla, Kiss, and Sesame Street. He has three children and is the subject of a forthcoming documentary film, Rebuilding Robert. He lives in New York.

Every Card You had, Every Card You Missed

From the dust jacket, to board art to essays, to every page of content, and on back to the bonus material this book is perfection. Those of us that collected the cards as they came out will be in nostalgia heaven. The fronts and backs of every card and sticker are shown. Captions throughout comment on creative be decisions, the card making process, legal concerns, and Topps relationship with the studio. Bonus material includes an epilogue that covers the Wonderbread cards, and 4 actual cards affixed to the back cover.

and this first volume in a series covering the Topps Star Wars card sets of the 70s & 80s are a great addition to that series

I'm a big fan of the Topps/Abrams line of nostalgic trading card books that have been coming out over the last few years (Wacky Packages, Garbage Pail Kids, and the Mars Attacks), and this first volume in a series covering the Topps Star Wars card sets of the 70s & 80s are a great addition to that series. I love that they're carrying over the fun graphic design elements from book to book (the faux wax wrapper dust covers, the imagery of the gum on the covers, etc.) and that they volumes are becoming increasingly more comprehensive. In the past the books have focused on 1-3 sets of cards per book, but this Star Wars volume collects all five series of the 1977-1979 cards. I also love that they exponentially increased the amount of commentary contained within the book (past books featured introductions and afterwards, but nut much else in the way of "new" content to accompany the card imagery.)

The only minor quibbles I have with this volume are that they end up wasting a bit of space by not blowing up the card scans to fill out more of the pages, and they didn't take care to feature keep corresponding cardbacks with their fronts. As for the former, I know a lot of folks suggest that the card scans are presented at full size, but they're actually larger than standard trading cards. So if they were going to go ahead and present them in a larger format they might as well have gone ahead and made them even larger to fill out the book. With the latter, I understand that a large number of the cards feature puzzle-backs that would not make sense to showcase individually next to the card fronts, but they could have at least done this with the cards that had story or fun-fact card backs. It would keep the reader from having to flip around in the book to get the feel of the card set. Just my two cents.

All in all, this is a wonderful addition to the Topps/Abrams trading card series and I hope that we'll soon see an announcement for a third volume concentrating on the Return of the Jedi sets after they release volume two this coming April.

A Delightful Book of Memories!

I once owned all of the original Topps Star Wars cards when they were first released. Purchasing this book took me back to my youth, when me and my friends would trade our doubles to each other -- in order to complete our collections. This books has every card, as well as every sticker! I also got a thrill at the cover of the book... as it fairly replicates the look (and feel) of the old packs of cards.There's even a mock piece of gum photographed on the front cover to simulate opening up a pack of cards.

The only slight gripe I have with the book is the quality of the pictures taken of the cards. All of them aren't perfect, as it seems that the author took pictures from used cards to create this book. It doesn't detract from my overall excellent opinion of the content, but I was expecting better quality from the source.

A delightful read!

Review of Stevenson’s Treasure, by Mark Weiderhanders

Such a good read! Probably not be the most professional way to start the review of a new
book on the literary scene, but in this charming novel, we follow with growing pleasure
the unusual relation between a younger man and an older woman from different countries, backgrounds, educations and experience. Will the married lady win her freedom? Will the penniless, unsuccessful writer ever reach success and marry her?

There is a long journey on foot, alone across a hilly part of southern France with an uncooperative donkey. This gives Robert Louis Stevenson an opportunity to tell Modestine, the donkey, about his overprotected childhood, since he suffered from such ‘weak lungs’ –– good description of severe pleurisy–– so that he wasn’t expected to reach adulthood. Stevenson is kind, sensitive, intelligent(to write Dr Jekill and Mr. Hyde he had to be unusually bright!) and a fine observer who keeps writing essays and stories, in spite of the absence of his lack of publishers.

There is a handsome, unfaithful but successful business man who threatens to take their children away from their mother if she continues seeing Stevenson, whom he calls a boy. Fanny, with a heavy heart, tries to distance herself from an adoring Louis, who never fails to find her.

As a businessman’s wife, Fanny is miserable. They are mismatched. She suffers from depression, which she calls brain fever. Her husband is devoted to their children and a good provider. How how can she divorce him to live with Louis, whom she loves, when he can barely support himself, let alone her and her children?

Plenty of travels, letters, hopes and drama fill this lively novel, whose ending, cleverly negative, is a success.

My criticisms are minor. A careful editor should have spotted the use of the a comparison of a furious person to a pressure cooker ready to explode. Pressure cookers were not commercially available for use till well past the eighteen seventies. The pronoun ‘who’ is used in place of ‘whom.’ In the afterword, the editor failed to change, ’principLE characters’ to ‘princiPAL characters,’ since the author clearly spoke of of the main, or major characters.

A satisfying, delightful romantic tale, full of believable characters, realistic period details, humor and lively scenes.

A Great Summer Read.

Part of the fun of reading new authors of biographies of somewhat elusive historical characters is the discovery of great stories and great story tellers. Mark Wiederanders tells a great tale of Louis Stevenson, a fascinating character. Though, obviously, greatly fictionalized, the externals are true. Louis's treasure is a fascinating character in her own right. Many, I suspect, will have some difficulty with the story of their relationship, the lengths to which Stevenson went in order to pursue his dream of marriage to his enamorata is told with a great sense of what it is like to chase after a great love.
Some of the writing could have used a bit more editing (hence the four stars rather than five) but I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a wonderful story wonderfully told.

The "before he got famous" story of a celebrated author

(Throughout the review I'm going to abbreviate Robert Louis Stevenson to RLS because homeboy has a long name and I don't have all day to spell it out 45 times in one review.)

Fanny Osbourne is barely keeping it together. One of her children has died and it's landed her in an asylum in France for "melancholia". The doctor there suggests that she goes to an artist colony nearby where she can find therapy in her painting and spending time with her daughter Belle. She gets more than she bargains for when she meets and falls in love with RLS. He isn't the famous author yet, he's more of a scraggly wanderer with a persistent cough due to a lung condition but the attraction between he and Fanny is swift. There is the complication that she is married, has two kids (one, is closer in age to RLS than Fanny is) and lives in America. She eventually leaves France, assuming that this is the end of her romance. But it is not.

RLS travels across the ocean and then across the United States to join Fanny in California. His doctor tells him before he leaves that the trip will almost certainly kill him. It nearly does. (That could be the subtitle of this book: "Almost everything nearly killed him. The fact he lived to write anything is darn near miraculous"). Fanny is shocked and surprised and thrilled and horrified at his arrival. She had been making a real effort to make a clean break from him and try to mentally leave him behind and now his scraggly blonde face is there.

The rest of the book details what happens next! Should they be together? What about the kids? If she divorces her husband she will be penniless and it's not like RLS is rolling in the dough, so what would they do? What will his family think? Will RLS live long enough to figure any of this out with Fanny since he keeps not eating and getting sick?

There's a kind of curdling moment when RLS sees men setting fire and hacking a part a dead whale carcass. Glad that this book wasn't scratch and sniff!

Here is what kind of grinded my gears about this book (and it really doesn't have anything to do with the book or the writing or anything like that).

-Belle is all concerned her daughter is a "trollop". Uuuuhh can we talk about how you and RLS were running around basically in public in France and in California and kind of flaunted it in front of everyone including the kids? If she is a trollop, who do you think she learned it from? Pot meet kettle, kettle meet pot.

- I had a hard time cheering for any of these characters. Everyone's complicated and messy and that's fine, but I like to have someone to cheer for. Personal preference.

But it was an interesting, easy read that was well paced. If you have an interest in forbidden romance, art, or RLS I definitely recommend it for you!

Fabulous Book, Great Primary Source

"Mountain Scouting" was published in 1881. At that time Edward Farrow was teaching at West Point. His status is described as: "Assistant Instructor of Tactics at the U.S. Military Academy, and Formerly Commanding Indian Scouts in the Department of the Columbia."

Farrow intended his book for young officers. From the Table of Contents (below) you can see that he covers many aspects of life in the field: horse care, rifle sighting, field medicine, camping, etc. There is quite a bit of information given. Everything from how to track game and Indians to what sorts of bedding, tents and socks ought to be used. Mathematics, of all things, abounds. Farrow discusses how to calculate how the width of a river without having to cross it, and how to determine how much shot is on hand. (It involves putting the shot into a triangular pile.) He discusses much of the information, including topics such as bullet trajectories and how to strap on an aparajoe, in detail; while glossing over other procedures, like how to rainproof canvas, bits of knowledge that were no-doubt commonly known at the time.

It should be noted that some of the medical advice is dangerous, if not downright deadly. If you don't know it already, avoid Sugar-of-lead at all costs. But in general the book is chock-a-block full of simply fascinating, detailed information for the field officer, soldier, historian, or history buff.

Great Read/Highly Recommended :::
One of the reasons that this book is such a joy to read is that Farrow doesn't assume you know much. He is quite explicit in describing how most things are done, whether that is how to make a stretcher out of two rifles and some jackets, or how to load an aparajoe on a stubborn mule.

The book would be suitable for breaking up into shorter reads. In fact, I can't imagine reading it straight through. Like fine brandy it should be sipped and savored. To the student of History and/or Military matters it will add to their understanding of problems in the field - at least as the field existed in the mid- and late 1800's. There are many detailed instructions and diagrams, and a great deal of fun math which provides fine examples of classic physics and geometry at work.

Before We Kill and Eat You

Garlock's accounts of the events he witnessed as a missionary in Africa in the 20th century serve as an insider's preface for the mass Christianization that swept Africa later in the century. The events that unfolded before him over his years in the African bush are recorded humbly and with a sense of reverance for both the people of Africa and God.

The events that occur are expertly told as to leave the reader hanging on every word and unable to put the book down. At a few points, the book becomes so intense that I was able to feel my blood pressure raising and haor stand on end. The fact that this a non-fiction book makes it even more intense for the reader. I give this book my highest rating.

This is a great book for newcomers to the faith, missionaries, aspiring missionaries and those just desiring too have their faith strengthened and read a testimony that could inspire anyone to live a life of action and service.

Was a neighbor of mine

Reverend Garlock was my next door neighbor in the early 70's in Bakersfield CA. I used to sit out at night and listen to stories of his life as a missionary in Africa. I didn't know he was writing this book at the time. After he had completed the book and it was published he gave me a signed copy, I have it to this day. Reading the stories of the Reverend and his wifes time in Africa is very moving but listening to them was something I will never forget. If you want to be inspired read this book.

Excellent book! Like reading another chapter in the book of Acts. Your faith cannot but increase after reading this book on the life and adventures of H.B. Garlock in Africa. As Hudson Taylor said, "Unless there is an element of risk in our exploits for God, there is no need for faith!"

An excellent text

This textbook is an excellent introduction to cognitive neuroscience and human neuropsychology. It integrates what is known (2004) about cortical control of cognitive processes with the strategies the cortical hemispheres can utilize in problem solving. The text also deals, I think fairly, with current issues in cognitive science that have yet to be fully resolved.

The text assumes little prior knowledge, and is clearly written. Although the topics include neuroanatomical terms beyond the ordinary, they are almost always explained clearly so that students can follow the important issues. I have used it three times in courses that I have taught and would hope that the text will be updated to remain current so that I may do so again.

Necessary for school - but I did not like this book.

This is one of those text books you actually get angry at. "Intro" levels of such difficult subjects should not be so verbose.

Still, the book has a lot of information. It is organized nicely, has good graphics, and has a very, very good summary at the end of each chapter.

There are very interesting stories that go along with each chapter.
