About the Author
Henry M. Sayre is Distinguished Professor of Art History at Oregon State University—Cascades Campus in Bend, Oregon. He is producer and creator of the 10-part television series A World of Art: Works in Progress, which aired on PBS in the fall of 1997; and author of seven books, including The Humanities; Writing About Art; The Visual Text of William Carlos Williams; The Object of Performance: The American Avant-Garde since 1970; and an art history book for children, Cave Paintings to Picasso.

"WORLD OF ART" is a mighy stretch for a title for an overpriced Art Appreciation book taught at a Junior College

I bought this to have conversations with a sister just going back to school after retiring from a long career in the military. After 10 years of architecture, art, psychology, sociology among other things, I thought it would be fun for a review.
After the first 2 chapters, this seemed somewhat a strange way to teach an art history class, but since I keep being reminded it is general "Art Appreciation," I suppose it will do. It does a whole lot of explaining WHY art is so important and not enough experiencing the actual art. Also, $160 seems a bit steep for a book that doesn't delve very deep, but texts always seem to cost more that any other books, but I would not balk to have another good Art History book in my arsenal of the collections already accrued. If it had not been on kindle, I would have sent it back after the first chapter, and simply asked my sibling what their topic of the week was and looked up photos they show from my ART History books and been done with it. Truly a waste of time and money if you have any interest or knowledge of art.

About the Author

Linda Dunlap is a professor of psychology. She has taught psychology and education courses since receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1980. She served as a part-time faculty member at State University of New York at New Paltz, Dutchess Community College, and Ulster Community College in New York from 1980 to 1984. Since 1984, she has served as a full-time faculty member and chair of the psychology department (1984-2005) at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. In addition, she served as a child development specialist for the Saint Francis Hospital Preschool Program in Poughkeepsie from 1986 to 1994. This program provides services for children 2 to 5 years old who have developmental delays. Dr. Dunlap served as a board member and executive officer for the Dutchess County Child Development Council. She frequently contributes to articles in national newspapers and magazine focusing on child development, teacher education, and parenting issues. She has also served as a consultant for local school districts. In addition, she has written two other textbooks, What All Children Need and Theory and Application,(University Press, 2nd ed. 2005)and Psychological Testing Across the Lifespan. (Prentice Hall, 2008).

Not professionally written

Unfortunetly, if you are like me usually you have no choice as to the text that you must buy for your university studies. However, if you are a professor browsing text on the subject of Spec. Ed., don't make the dire mistake of choosing this one. So far, information has been blatantly incorrect. In addition, the style of writting is unclear and has many run-on sentences. Also, it is not organized in a coherent way.

Well thought out, and informative

I am a nurse working in early intervention. This is a great resource book for the provider working with children with disabilities and developmental delays. I like the way she talks about all subjects from Autism, to hearing loss,to motor delays, to fetal alcohol syndrome, to speech and language delays, and to the importance of play. She talks about occupational therapists and how they can adapt equipment to help modify the problem: whether it be eating, motor or cognitive. She gives overviews of Spina Bifida, amputations, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, and visual impairments. If you are out in the trenches working with the children, you realize how valuable this book really is. I don't think as a student sitting in a classroom you can appreciate it.

Great book! A must have for providers working with children with disabilities.

A biblical discussion on being wronged

The book offers an interpretation of the bible's teachings on how to approach life after you have been wronged.

This book was not without utility as it directs you to biblical stories to offer guidance. The challenge I had with the book was looking past all the biased comments and opinions (the preaching) that had nothing to do with the topic at hand.

I found myself thinking this book would be better directed to a pastor or minister looking for source materials so he/ she was better prepared to counsel church members or in preparation for a sermin. I did not feel like the intension of the book was to help the reader, rather to convey the opinion of the minister who wrote the book.

I personally found the book light on helpful content, although I did find some of the stories thought provoking and helpful and I know I would not have referenced these stories on my own.

To a person who is trying to recover, unless you are specifically looking for a biblical discussion on forgiveness, I would select something else.

About the Author
Jelbert has spent the last five years researching the psychology of happiness. His first book,�The Happiness Animal�became a best seller and is recognized as the first practical exercise guide to happiness. In April 2016, Jelbert released a new narrative of happiness,�25 Days. His alternative careers guide,�Jobs Verse�will be published�in June 2016, and he is currently working on a series of five illustrated children's books about five happiness animals. (publisher and release date TBC).Jelbert was born in Cornwall, the far South Western edge of the United Kingdom, and grew up on a fourth generation family farm two miles outside of Penzance. Yes, the Penzance that made the Pirates famous. Jelbert's childhood was spent walking the cows in for milking after school, sorting through potatoes on the harvester, and driving the tractor while Jelbert's parents and grandparents cut cauliflower. By age eighteen, Jelbert had developed an aptitude for languages, thanks in part to the many conversations with the girls next door during the family's holiday trips to Brittany.Jelbert left the farm to study modern languages at Exeter University. After graduating, Reuters offered Jelbert a job translating French and German market information into English. Over the next ten years Jelbert worked in London, Geneva, and New York and took a year-long assignment to India in 2005 before relocating to Sydney in 2006. Jelbert became an Australian citizen in July 2010. A new approach to turning a life around

I received a review copy from the author and I was blown away. This really is simple things to do and refocus on to make your life more pleasant. There can always be things in your life that you can approach differently, see the good in, and the Happiness Animal is a way to start looking at them.
The author went through some very troubling things, hit bottom, and turned his life around and is now showing others how to do the same. A great investment in your life, the book is an indepth look at an entire life's direction --one to happiness and contentment without frustration and resentment.

The Happiness Animal is a life changing experience. Author Will Jelbert delivers an insightful and intelligent look at what happiness is and how to achieve it. The book delves into philosophy, science, psychology and introspection while providing excellent guidance on how to achieve happiness in your life.

Jelbert’s engaging anecdotes allow the reader to relate to each situation and learn the happiness components demonstrated in them. Reading this book is like talking with a dear friend and receiving the guidance and care you need. Learning that happiness is obtainable and that it is something you can have now is inspiring. Jelbert explains that many people spend their lives thinking they will be happier if they have more time, money, et cetera, but the truth is you can achieve sustained happiness now. The exercises provided in the book are mind-opening and truly helpful. They will help strength your happiness animal and enrich your life. I am so happy to have discovered this book and to have the tools now to make myself truly happy. I am grateful to Will Jelbert for sharing this brilliant guide with the world. I highly recommend it!

Will writes in such a simple way which helped me visualize everything he said. I read the book in one go and I will be reading it again and again so that i can start exercising my happiness animal properly

VERY SPECIAL BOOK

I love Sylvia Browne and every one of her books. She is an awesome person who has much knowledge and wisdom about Mother and Father God, Angels, Spirit Guides, etc. If you are open to life and the world around you you can't help but love the books Sylvia writes. They are filled with so much love, wonder, fact, research, enlightenment, etc. She is truly a wonderful person who has opened up a whole new world to me. My life has changed drastically for the better. This book will enlighten you and prove to you there is a Mother God and she is awesome. Open up to her and let her in and awesome things will start to happen to you in your life. Who couldn't use more enlightenment, love and miracles in their life? Get this book and read it. I got it on Thursday night and had it read by Friday afternoon the next day. I couldn't put it down. It is filled with so much wonderful information, love, enlightenment and wonderful stories by real life people. It is a book that only God could have written through Slyvia of course. Having studied all aspects of all spiritual paths,religions,dogmas,etc..I found it to be a great refresher!This book should be titled for beginners seeking truth in an all loving God/Goddess-FEMALE/MALE.For God/Goddess is all loving.
Once again the incomparable controversial Sylvia Browne shares her light with the uninformed-I LOVE IT!You will learn many paths & Traditions that you may never have heard of,if your new to seeking truth in God/Goddess.I especially love how Sylvia shoots straight from the hip and offers such wonderful insights with references/weblinks to seek out what she puts forth.A really great read and an easy one to understand.I Love you Sylvia.

Interesting. This book has answered some of the questions I have long had about the maleness of God in so many teachings when there are quite definitely two sexes here. Something was always lacking, and Sylvia Browne seems to have filled in some of the cracks with this book.

Beautiful Overview of Art Based on Illusions

This is a beautiful paperback art book that covers a broad spectrum of art related to optical illusions. I've seen it on sale in many locations, including museum gift shops. Escher, Dali, and Arcimboldo are represented (as you'd expect) but the bulk of the book is devoted to a wide variety of artists inspired by either the artists mentioned earlier or various quirks of visual perception. Op Art is well-represented, as are ambigrams, nontraditional portraiture, unabashedly commercial artwork, and sculptures based on constructions in Escher's famous works. I'd already seen many of these images on the internet, but it's better to see them within this intelligent context. The book, with its many full-page reproductions, does a wonderful job of exciting the reader with the possibilities of illusionistic art, and wisely lets the artwork speak for itself more often than not.

Two things did surprise me about this book (although they did not cause me to lower my rating). There is very little in here to connect these works of art to even the basic principles of visual perception in layman's terms. I was also surprised to see so little attention given to Magritte, who seems to have overtaken Dali in the public's mind as the supreme Surrealist. There is some minor nudity scattered around, but nothing that isn't PG-13.

When I was a teen many years ago, I treasured my Escher calendars and Dali postcards. I would have loved to have seen such a book back then, and I am glad that this book is still in print and reasonably popular.

Love it!!!!

My second copy. The first arrived with slight damage (hey it happens) and Amazon lived up to their re[putation- a replacement came quick and easy! The book itself is the best of it's kind- realartists, well known and lesser known, but no collections of dumb optical illusions. This is real art, using perspective in ways you never imagined!

This is a very cool book. However, I bought it for my 10 year old & there are some pretty inappropriate pictures in there. I will not be giving him this book. I'll be returning the book & finding a more age appropriate, optical illusions book.

Review of Partenie's (ed) 'Plato's Myths'

This is set of ten essays considers the various strategies, contexts, contents and receptions of the myths within Plato' dialogues. The essays are spread widely by various methods of analysis and argumentative structure. With no dud in the whole bunch, my favorites were the essays by Ferrari (I'm partial to his literate framework), Burnyeat (his method of 'verbum in loco' analysis is both conservative and brilliant, analytical and authentic) and McGrath, who's closing 'history' of visual representations of the myths in Renaissance artwork and iconography clearly took a great deal of research and diligent care to assemble.

In this most gothic of Robert McCammon's novels, setting is key: the continuing saga of the Usher family (descended from the brother of Roderick and Madeline of Edgar Poe's "Fall of the House of Usher") takes place in the weird and picturesque heart of the North Carolina mountains. The haughty, aristocratic Ushers live in a mansion near Asheville; the poor but crafty mountain folk (whose families are just as ancient) live on Briartop Mountain nearby. At harvest time, when the book's action unfolds, the mountains are a blaze of color. Add to the mixture a sinister history of mountain kids disappearing every year, a journalist investigating those disappearances, a monster called "The Pumpkin Man," moldy books and paintings in a huge old library at the Usher estate, and a secret chamber with a strange device involving a brass pendulum and tuning forks--and you've got a splendid recipe for atmospheric horror.

Not a book for children. . .

I read Usher's Passing a number of years ago, when I was in my early teens. At the time I found the book to be terrifying and even now, in my early 20's I am haunted by the image of the Pumpkin Man peering down from the dark at that little boy. I decided to read it again, just because it had never left my mind; I needed to find out if it was really as frightening as I remembered. It is. I have also read Swan Song and Boy's Life, and can easily say that R. McCammon is my favorite author and that Usher's Passing is the scariest book I have ever read.

Gothic, Disturbing, Brilliant

McCammon takes on Poe's "Fall of the House of Usher" and spins a new story from where it all left off. Images of Usher history leading towards the present and intermingled with present-day suspense add a disturbingly quiet element to things. Missing children, a legacy of destruction, a house beyond understanding -- Rix Usher's life, his destiny, all of it, is tied in with the dark secrets of his family. Another reviewer said it was not the kind of book to read again and again; wait a few years, but I disagree. This is the kind of book that demands reading again and again, for there's something new to find with every read. It's not a lightweight read -- you MUST think about it, process it. It is by far the most frightening book I've ever read in terms of its implications for the characters -- and ourselves.

A great horror book I just keep coming back to.

I think the reason why I enjoy this book so much is its use of typical gothic horror trappings, which I love. What can I say, I like the classic, i.e. what others might call "tired out cliches." "Usher's Passing" by Robert McCammon, a very fine author, is just a good old fashioned horror story.

The story starts off with a vignette from the past. The Ushers are a real family, and their patriarch is angry that Edgar Allan Poe has come so close to the truth about their peculiar form of degeneracy. But when he sees how badly off Poe is himself, he realizes he can let it slide and no one would believe him anyway.

Forward to the "present day" (in this case, 1984). Rix Usher is a descendant of the original Ushers of the Poe tale, and he's very troubled. He's kind of a loser prone to crippling panic attacks (which we learn is a malady all the Ushers suffer from), and he is recovering from his wife's suicide. His father, who he broke with when he was growing up, is dying, and either Rix, his older, disgusting brother Boone (think of a combination of Animal House's Bluto and Back To The Future's Biff Tannen, and you have Boone), or his sleek drug adddict model sister Kat will inherit the vast estate in the mountains of southwest North Carolina known as "Usherland" along with the $10 billion armanent company that the family has grown fat on. So they all return to the eerie estate and find much more in store for them then they had in mind.

This book positively oozes that feeling of autumn horror in a way unlike anything I've read since Ray Bradbury. The setting is wonderful - Usherland is a sprawling, enormous mountain estate made even more fascinating through a number of facets. For instance, a bunch of backwards hillfolk live on the fringes of the estate (it's thousands of acres, hard to keep an eye on that much land). All the leaves are changing color, giving it that harvest time Halloween effect. It has cliffs, holes, and briarpatches, making it extremely difficult to navigate. What's more, this parcel of land is stalked by not one but two supernatural killers - the black-as-pitch panther Greediguts and the terrifying Pumpkin Man, both of whom have been killing for ages in the area. If that's not enough for you, somewhere on this property is an abandoned, ruined lodge that no one will set foot in and Rix has horrible half-memories of getting lost in as a child.

I really like that set-up, and the story's execution is quite good as well, but I have to agree somewhat with the previous review that the nosy reporter and the rather unbelievable media interest in the family were the weakest points of the story. Yet, they were necessary to move the story along.

The story has some good surprises along the way and the loose ends all get wrapped up. It's a great read that trades well off its fantastic atmosphere and setting. Highly recommended.
