A Good Reference to Have

As mentioned in the introduction to the text, this book is not for professional designers. This book is intended for those of us who need to put together a flyer, presentation, or newsletter, but we don't have the background in design. The design the author refers to is the design of the printed page.
The author explains simple principles that help us see what makes for a good design like proximity, alignment, repetition, and contrast. There are plenty of before-and-after examples to show you exactly what she means. The explanations are also very understandable. Williams does not preach to you, but rather helps you see the different elements which can make the visual more effective.
There are also some quizzes with answers in the back. Included is a short bibliography so the reader can get more information if he or she chooses.
There are some problems with the book. One, it discusses the use of color, but there are no color pictures to illustrate the point. The author knew the illustrations would no be color so asks you to visualize this in your head. It wasn't the most helpful here.
Also, towards the end, she uses some editing/printing jargon that she never explains. If the reader does not have a design background, why mention leading if not explained?
Overall, I find this book to be very helpful. Knowing the elements I should be looking for ensures that my experimenting with flyers is more productive and effective. I would recommend this book to anyone needing to create newsletters, flyers, and the like.

Sensible and Practical Advice for Layout and Typography

Robin Williams provides a practical introduction to the classical principles of design in this pamphlet-sized book. Her discussion of layout is organized around four basic design principles: Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity. Each is presented in its own chapter with plenty of you-can-do-it-at-home examples. The typography section explains the principles of Concord, Conflict and Contrast, based on Williams'classification of type faces by style (Oldstyle, Modern, Slab Serif, Sans Serif, Script and Decorative), weight (Light, Bold), Shape (Narrow, Wide), and spacing. A discussion of color is notably absent; the roots of this book in early grayscale Macintosh computing show through.
Williams's book should hit the mark for amateurs creating one-page designs such as simple web sites, brochures or business cards. Set aside an hour or two to read it and do the exercises, and your designs should improve immensely. Mine have.

Read this book before you publish anything!

If you pick up this book looking for that on-the-edge-physical comedy that made Robin Williams one of the worlds most famous comedians, boy have you got the wrong Robin Williams! This author is one of the leading authorities on visual design and presents her information in a clear, concise, no-nonsense (well almost)kind of way. Her book is a valuable resource even for people who think they are familiar with aspects of design or have been told that they, "have a good eye," so don't be dissuaded by the title. As an experienced journalist, the book brought back a lot of my earlier newspaper layout training. It put into plain language the principles for which I had no name other than, "that just doesn't look right." The principles of proximity, alignment, repetition, and contrast are highlighted and expounded upon in each section. I found the section on typography to be extremely interesting and I find myself looking for examples of contrasting type all around me now.
Visual examples of weak design and what can be done to make the design better are on nearly every page, and make the subject matter very clear. The author maintains that most beginning mistakes in design are tied to mistakes in Contrast Repetition, Alignment, or Proximity (C.R.A.P). That sounds about right. If you are going to publish any document (print or electronic) this should be the first book you read before you do.

About the Author
John Manning was born in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, and has been a research scientist in the Compton Herbarium at the National Botanical Institute, South Africa, since 1989. He works at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town, one of the world's great botanical gardens and an important center for research on the African flora. Although he has studied the anatomy, embryology and seed development of plants in diverse families, including the "Fabaceae", "Proteaceae" and "Stilbaceae", he has focused his research more recently on the I"ridaceae", collaborating on various research projects with Peter Goldblatt. Together they have investigated the evolution and pollination biology of the African genus "Lapeirousia" and the systematics, pollination systems and evolution of "Gladiolus" in southern Africa. John and Peter have coauthored several books, including "Gladiolus in Southern Africa" and various wildflower guides to the southern African flora, the most recent of which was "Wildflowers of the Fairest Cape" (Redroof Design and Timber Press, 2000). John is also an accomplished botanical artist and photographer; his drawings have been published in numerous books and scientific journals.

Good for beginners but...

For an introduction to hydrology this is a good book, but it's a little too basic and laymen for my tastes. This criticism aside, the information in this book is nevertheless good and adequate to provide you with decent background information in hydrology.
If you've had any education in basic meteorology, climatology, oceanography, etc... you won't find this book very useful since it is mostly a recap of 101 courses in the physical sciences, but for the rest of us who haven't had much experience in these fields, this book is not only very informative, but it is a very interesting read... who would've known the molecular structure of water was so unique and life-sustaining?! Alter it even a little and life would be impossible, lakes would freeze from the bottom up instead of the top down... and other weird possibilities! For the beginner, this book is easy to read, avoids math, and provides a relatively strong foundation.
I recommend this book the 90% of you who want to learn more about the physical sciences... but for the 10% looking for more details over what they already learned in beginning courses, look for another book since this one will only recap that info.

Excellent book

I picked up a copy of this book many years ago (probably an earlier edition). I thought it might be a candidate as a text for an introductory hydrology class for young civil engineers. I read the book and even used it one semester. I can offer a few comments on that basis.

First, this book is well-written. The language is clear and the prose is enjoyable. In fact, for a book intended to convey scientific material, it is exceptionally well-written and clearly understandable be anyone with a reasonable background.

When I used this book in the class, it was as a supplemental book intended to be a reader. I don't know whether the students appreciated it or not, but that was my intent.

What the book doesn't do is present technology. If you need to apply technology, then this book is not useful. A standard engineering textbook is required to provide that information. Viessman and Lewis is competent in this regard and is also well-written.

However, if you want to understand hydrologic principles without the need to execute computations, this book will do that very well. You will find much of what you want to know about hydrology from Manning's book. Then, if you need to execute computations, another text with that material will be more approachable, given the knowledge derived from Manning's book.

I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn basic hydrology, particularly those who do not need to do hydrologic computations.

Details in chapters is good for an intro class. But my professor filled in a lot of extra
subjects that wasnt in the book. Book did provide me details for calculations and math.

It's curriculum that we are required to use. It had some good ideas, and it's okay. I'm not knocking it, but with it being based on the book Have you Filled a Bucket Today?, I expected a lot more. That book is awesome. In comparison to Tribes or Adventures in Peace Making or Building Intentional Communities, The Bucket Squad is nice.

As elementary school counselor, I'm using this book as a curriculum for friendship groups for children in grades K-3. The bucket-filling concept is something that kids easily understand, and I've found they naturally buy into this program. This book is a way to explicitly teach social skills and kindness - qualities that our world needs more of! The lessons are easy to follow, and the reproducible activities are valuable. Highly recommended resource!

I have been a fan of Gary's books for years. This is my forth and like all the others it's written in a highly readable and easy to follow format. Everything is well documented and there are loads of examples. This book is SO much more than a how to use the camera manual! There are better, less expensive choices. This book while it had relevant information was very cheaply printed using cheap paper and illustrations were monochrome, often had banding and frequently difficult to see. Should have been 1/2 the price .

Extremely helpful for any user of a Sony RX-100. This is not some fluffed out "RX-100 Guide for Dummies", but instead a book where the deeper you study it, the more you will learn. The scope of the information and the orderly way it is presented makes for an excellent learning resource. Gary's writing style is informative, to the point, and his extensive real world experience with the RX-100 is readily apparent.

I bought the RX-100 as a compact travel and walk-about camera for those occasions where I didn't want to lug my Canon DSLR and multiple lenses along with me. The RX-100 is easy to get up and running in basic modes. However the detailed knowledge I've gained through Gary's book has been an eye-opener in understanding the versatility of this camera, allowing me to use it in its fullest capacities.

But the physical properties of the book are lacking. Cheap paper, muddy B&W photos instead of color, very disappointing to me. I gleaned much knowledge from the text, but the book's overall usefulness would have been significantly improved by having sharp color photos.

Now for the good. Any purchaser can simply contact Gary through his website and with proof of purchase, get sent a PDF of the book at no cost. Being able to read the book on your monitor in full color makes a world of difference.

About the Author
Matt Raible is a Montana native who grew up in a log cabin without electricity or running water. He would hike to school a mile and a half every day (skiing in the winter), and would arrive home to a very loving family. "The Cabin" is a beautiful place that will always be near and dear to him. Even without electricity, his father connected the family to the Internet using a 300 Baud modem, a Commodore 64, and a small generator. CompuServe was the name, slow was the game. Matt became inspired by the Internet in the early 1990s, and has been developing websites and web applications ever since. He graduated from the University of Denver in 1997 with degrees in Russian, international business, and finance.

Sing Li is a systems consultant, avid open source developer, and active freelance writer. With over two decades of industry experience, Sing is a regular contributor to printed magazines and e-zines, and has a sizable roster of book credits. Sing is an evangelist of the mobile Java, VoIP, and P2P evolution.

Dave Johnson works at HAHT Commerce and is an experienced software developer in the commercial software development, telecommunications, and geographic information systems industries. Dave has been working with Java since before the dawn of Java 1.0. Since then, he has been involved in the development of a number of Java-based commercial products, including the HAHTsite Application Server, HAHT eSyndication, Venetica's Jasper document viewer, and Rogue Wave's Object Factory IDE. He has just embarked on the next stage of his career adventure by joining ThoughtWorks.

Charles Brown is one of the most noted author, consultant, and trainers in the industry today. His books about Dreamweaver and Fireworks have received critical acclaim and used worldwide as teaching tools. In addition to his work in the IT industry, Charles is also a noted concert pianist, organist, and guitarist appearing in major concert centers world-wide. He began his musical studies at age 4 and went on to study with famed pianist Vladimir Horowitz. At age 14, he made his debut with Leonard Bernstein and later studied at the famed Juilliard School. Eventually he went to Paris to study with the 20th century legend, Igor Stravinsky. While working with Stravinsky, Charles developed a close friendship with one of the most powerful artistic forces of the 20th century: Pablo Picasso. What he learned about creativity from Picasso he uses today in his writings and training work. Charles is a certified Macromedia/Adobe trainer who is in heavy demand worldwide. Excellent Book for All Levels

I have been a Java developer for five years now, and have worked with JSP and Servlets for a number of years. As many in the software industry can attest to, you can quickly get tied down working on applications that were initially designed several years ago. This can leave you with little time to explore all the new features that come out with the latest release of the Servlet and JSP specs. Wanting to get a handle on what JSP 2.0 has to offer, I decided to get a book on the subject matter that starts from the ground up. Although a lot of the material would be review for me, I always find it important to read this information over again as it helps to strengthen my overall understanding.
`Pro JSP' is probably one of the best books on JSP that I have read in a long time. To me a good technical book needs to do three things. First it needs to explain how the technology works. Second, it needs to explain how best to use this technology in the real world. And finally, it needs to do the first two things in a clear and understandable manner. The reader shouldn't be left scratching their head trying to figure out what the author was trying to say.
On the first point, `Pro JSP' does a thorough job of explaining the ins and outs of the JSP 2.0 release. The expression language, JSTL, tags, filtering, security, deployment; all of these important topics are covered. There are an amazing three chapters devoted to tags and another two chapters on filtering! The authors do an excellent job of focusing in on some of the more complex aspects of JSP and spending the time to fully explain all the nuances. Based on just the technical content alone, a person will walk away from this book with a solid understanding of the power available to them with JSP 2.0.
But of course `JSP Pro' doesn't just end there. Unlike many books that simply throw a ton of information at you and then leave you to figure out how to use it, this book goes much further. The authors spend a considerable amount of time discussing the best practices to use when including this technology in your applications. From repeatedly hammering home the need to keep scriplets out of JSP pages, to the chapters devoted to web application patterns and performance enhancements, the reader will be left well prepared to use their newly acquired skills on their own projects.
The writing itself is also very well done. The examples are short and to the point, and the writing is clear and understandable. I never found myself struggling to understand what the author was trying to convey, or tripping over complicated code to see the examples in action.
The only caveat I would have would be with the last chapter dealing with using `Struts, Xdoclet, and Other Tools'. The authors recommend that the reader have an understanding of these tools before reading the chapter. They then dive right in to how to best use these tools without a lot of explanation. This may be just a little too much for someone coming to this book as a complete beginner to JSP. This chapter will of course prove invaluable to a more experienced programmer, but the abrupt change of pace from the rest of the book felt a little uneven.
All in all I would definitely recommend this book to JSP programmers of all levels.

Good Book, A lot of information but not a beginner book

When I first bought this book was totally new to JSP and XML. I started reading it and then i realize that it was not a beginners book. It was great because it would force me to study a little bit more. I read a XML and JSP tutorial and it was enough to begin studying JSP with this book.
It has lots of detailed information about client/server persistence graphics and models too.
I bought this book because the history of the author, Simon Brown, and the last edition was five star recomendation on JavaRanch and Amazon reviews.

Stumbled onto this great find!!

This was my first read by Clara Bayard and I was instantly impressed by the premise of the story, very creative!! I love the developing relationship between Trey and Amanda in their search for her sister Kat. The intricacies of Eden Club add a level of mystery and danger and leave you guessing as to who is good and who is evil.

I recommend this story and it's sequel as I eagerly await book 3!

This was a slow book in the beginning, but gradually had me intrigued. But then it was over :( way too soon. I liked how the two main characters were shaping up and how the mystery of the plot was developing. I definitely want to know how it will end. Hopefully the next book will conclude at least one of the mysteries laid out for us so far.
