An impressive work

As an amateur history buff, I found this to be an amazing work. I had been looking for a history of how the Native American federations had inspired the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, and I was not disappointed. While Sidis seems to take a pro Native American approach, he is very complete in his expositions. There are no citations to show his sources, but the few things I checked up on seem to pan out. His explanation of the differences between the New England, Mid-Atlantic and Southern States resonates in a very meaningful way, increasing my understanding of the history of the U.S., and how that history continues to play out in today's politics. For example, his point that our Constitutional form of government was meant to undermine democracy is clearly reflected in the 2016 controversy over how delegates are selected in the Presidential primaries, often undermining the will of the voters in favor of party-selected "representatives." Also, the distinction between proponents of "States rights" and those of "individual rights" is still very much alive.
I also appreciated the clarity and intelligence of his writing.
What I learned from William Sidis will stay with me, and I'm sure I will return to this fascinating work many times.

Sidis' unusual take on American history shakes the usual view by drawing correspondences from Native American federations to the forms out of which the various and very different constitutions of the states were envisioned. He draws clear distinctions in the use of words like federation, democracy, republic, monarchy, freedom and liberty, all keystones of the philosophy of governments that has come from the American revolution and its influence on European history. Sidis ties in a fair amount of detail about the "Cincinnati Conspiracy". Very interesting take, especially for someone somewhat versed from the usual versions.

Book Review of TotIs by J Joseph Kazden – Kirkus Reviews

Kazden offers a mind-expanding debut novel about a symposium examining the core concepts of the universe.
Imagine if great minds from across the ages could congregate in one room to discuss their understanding of time and reality. In this ambitious work, Socrates, Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking, among others, come together to do just this. To befit the nature of the symposium as a great Hellenic institution, the author gives each of the characters Greek names. Einstein is called “Miapetra,” meaning “one stone”; Hawking is referred to as “Geraki” or “hawk,” whereas Isaac Newton is “Neatono” or “new ton.” The men meet at Neatono’s house, where they begin a discussion about relativity theory, and specifically how the past, present, and future are relative. The author’s use of Socratic questioning proves to be a gentle introduction to complex ideas, particularly for the uninitiated. Yet, readers may still benefit from prior knowledge of quantum mechanics to truly grasp this discussion. The explorations of how perceptions of reality vary between individuals are particularly fascinating: “So two individuals of the same species with sensory equipment of unequal quality will experience differently the same reality, to all intents and purposes, would you agree?” The book introduces two new definitions: antIs, “the human observer’s experience of reality and the universe,” and totIs, “which defines a total reality of the universe unavailable to human observer’s created antIs reality.” The arguments are dazzlingly convincing, although there’s a certain arrogance in reanimating the world’s greatest thinkers simply to have them concur with one’s main thesis. However, the book is not without a wry humor—Max Planck talks of switching to a gluten-free diet and Newton speaks of getting his cataracts removed. Purists may contest the probability of each word the author drops into the mouths of these great men, but this controversy is part and parcel of this brilliantly daring piece of work.

About the Author

J. Joseph Kazden was born in Brooklyn, New York, and he studied mathematics, chemistry, and psychology in college during the early 1970s. Deeply influenced by the ideas of such thinkers as Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell, he began a lifelong pursuit of the nature of perception and reality. This led to the study of Taoist, Buddhist, and Hindu thought, along with shamanic and First Peoples rituals and practices, in addition to continued study in physics and cosmology, focusing on the counterintuitive nature of the reality described by relativity, quantum mechanics, and particle physics.

In the early eighties, he began a career in art, focusing on images generated by the psyche, which Jung called archetypes of the collective unconscious. Believing that the world we experience is not ultimate reality, he came to an epiphany in 2012. This book is the culmination of this journey and the expression of that epiphany.

Totis challenges our view of “reality” in an entertaining and easy to follow story. Kazden crafts a hypothetical conversation between some of the greatest thinkers known to mankind blending their theories and discoveries to justify the possibility that we are all living a persistent illusion. This is a powerful book that has the potential to change the way the reader views the world.

An Easy Introduction a Philosophy

Although I do not think of myself as a philosophy student I found this book VERY easy to follow as J Joseph builds his case, step by step. The author has cleverly given the 'argument' roles to known philosophers to keep it interesting. The writing itself is succinct and carefully written to encourage thinking along these lines. I recommend it.

About the Author

Edward Blair�is the Michael J. Cemo professor of marketing and entrepreneurship and chair of the Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship in the Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston. He has been chair of the American Statistical Association Committee on Energy Statistics, which advises the U.S. Energy Information Administration on statistical matters, and previously served on the U.S. Census Bureau Advisory Committee. He has been a National Science Foundation panelist, national conference chair for the American Marketing Association, editorial board member for Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and Journal of Business Research, and instructor in sampling and survey methods for the American Marketing Association School of Marketing Research. His research interests include survey sampling and cognitive aspects of survey methodology.�

Johnny Blair is an independent consultant. Previously, he was a principal scientist and senior survey methodologist at Abt Associates Inc., where he directed the Cognitive Testing Laboratory. He has conducted research on sampling rare populations, measurement error in proxy reporting, and cognitive interviewing for pretesting survey instruments. He is a member of the Design and Analysis Committee, which provides statistical advice for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), often referred to as The Nation’s Report Card. He has served on National Research Council panels to assess major government-sponsored surveys. His research publications include many book chapters, and over 50 articles in academic journals and in the Proceedings of the Joint Statistical Meetings of the American Statistical Association Section on Survey Methods. He served two terms on the editorial board of Public Opinion Quarterly and is a frequent peer reviewer for several other research journals.�

Clear, Applicable, and Extremely Helpful

Written by two authors with authoritative stature in survey research, this is a very useful book for survey practitioners.

The idea of drawing samples to study a population may seem obvious. In practice, however, many pitfalls exist. This book starts with sampling basics, covering how to define and frame the population, moving on to sampling and executing research. It also explains in detail how to conduct two perhaps most commonly used sampling methods, stratified sampling and cluster sampling. A big strength of the book is that it's very practical and crystal clear. The book explains arcane statistical concepts related survey sampling without using a single Greek letter! For example, the concept of Central Limited Theorem can be elusive to many, even experienced practitioners. This book uses a simple numerical example to illustrate it before discussing sample size selections. Amazingly clear. Wish I'd encountered statistics like that.

Coupled with another book by the same group of authors, Designing Surveys: A Guide to Decisions and Procedures, you pretty get all the references needed to have a practice in surveying.

Highly recommended for those interested in survey topics.

About the Author
Karen Gadd has been teaching TRIZ and problem solving with engineering teams from major companies for over 13 years. Her mission is to make TRIZ learning straightforward and the TRIZ Tools easy to use. She has worked on nothing but TRIZ since discovering and learning its power to give us all the routes, to all the solutions, to all engineering problems.
In 1998 Karen started Oxford Creativity to concentrate on developing simple and practical TRIZ problem solving for the European market. Karen has taken TRIZ to major companies including Rolls-Royce, British Nuclear Group, Bentley Motors, BAE Systems, Nissan, Pilkington, Borealis and Sanofi Aventis. Oxford Creativity is now well established as one of the world's top TRIZ companies and has helped to make TRIZ well known and widely used throughout Europe and encouraged top companies to create expert TRIZ teams for innovative problem solving.
Karen studied Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College, and has an MBA from London Business School. After working in strategy and corporate planning in the City of London she returned to live in Oxford and was a tutor at Oxford's Business School the European School of Management ESCP-EAP (based in Paris, Oxford, Madrid and Berlin). From 1995-2002 she was a Governor of Coventry University. Karen's career has been dedicated to creating new enterprises which make a difference - she founded both MUSIC at OXFORD and the European Union Baroque Orchestra and ran both for over ten years and raised millions in corporate sponsorship to make their activities possible. These successful music organisations still flourish. MUSIC at OXFORD transformed Oxford's music scene and is now approaching its 30th season of top professional classical concerts. EUBO has celebrated 25 years of launching the careers of talented young musicians and has been so successful in its mission, that there are now former EUBO students in every major professional baroque ensemble in the world. Karen launched Oxford Creativity to make TRIZ accessible to everyone and transform and launch careers of TRIZ enthusiasts and champions. There are now thousands of engineers who have learned TRIZ from Karen and who intelligently daily apply TRIZ to solve difficult technical and scientific problems.
Karen is long married, has four children and three grandchildren lives happily in Oxford and the Lake District. Karen has recently become a director of the Orchestra of St.John's and concerts and singing are still part of her interests and activities.

Very easy to read!

I suggest to use this book as part of the basic package to start learning TRIZ. The cartoons make you smile, the writing style is like talking to someone, which makes it easy to read.

In depth explanation of TRIZ, but repetitive, wordy, redundant, and repetitive. Trimming would improve this book tremendously.

I recently learned about TRIZ and purchased this book to develop a better understanding of the subject. While the book is sufficiently in depth, it is a torturous read. It is wordy, repetitive, and somewhat disorganized. More space is dedicated to describing (and justifying) what the book will be explaining than in the actual explanation. The same exact ideas, often word for word, are presented over, and over, and over, and... However, the real world examples of TRIZ application are most helpful, so much so I wish there were more of them, that each one presented was carried through to conclusion, and that the process was described in even greater detail. I learn more from seeing how something is done than by reading about how it should be done. The subject matter is interesting and I would have like to have learned how to apply TRIZ in real life (my ideal outcome), but I don't feel like this book alone has prepared me to do so. One last word of warning. Many of the cartoons and diagrams are not legible reading this on Kindle.

A modern and detailed text on TRIZ for technologist and beyond

I liked TRIZ for Engineers. As a practicing engineer for 20 years, and as a student of TRIZ for five years, I have read a wide range of text on classical TRIZ and higher levels of TRIZ approaches used in inventive problem solving. The book presents real engineering problems in short form scenarios and through case studies that include detailed notes on how to use a range of TRIZ tools to generate solutions. The example problems are engineering based, but less industrial focused, so the examples have a wide application to the engineering market and technologist new to the basic TRIZ concepts.

The book offers problem solving maps and algorithms that illustrate how the TRIZ tools presented in the chapters can combine to form larger algorithms. The solution maps present through out the chapters flow through the early phases of developing a problem statement, identifying which TRIZ tools fit the problem scenario and onward to developing and applying solutions. The book also offers color figures and tables, which compliment the text as it illustrates how TRIZ is used to model systems and analyze functions. Thematic cartoons are included, as the author notes to bring some levity to the educational process. In my opinion, the cartoons present a physical contradiction as a reader, as they both add and distract from the text and the more formal diagrams and figures.

The author emphasizes that TRIZ is a set of tools, which can offer more than one solution to a problem and that all solutions have some level of merit based on the users needs. This perspective is well supported in the book's classical TRIZ modeling examples. The later chapters include examples of the Traditional TRIZ 76 Standard Solutions, Substance-Field modeling, and ARIZ, which adds clarity to modeling problems with higher-level TRIZ tools. These advanced concepts discussions are supported with case study based examples. The book offers illustrations of blank worksheets that students can use as a reference to help analyze and execute the book's algorithms while problem solving. There are also chapters describing how the TRIZ concepts can be used to analyzing trends and inventing with TRIZ beyond the basic problem solving.

The best part of the book from my perspective is the text-based descriptions of creating a functional analysis model and developing solutions through trimming and substitution of the functional models. I complement Karen Gadd on her efforts to bring TRIZ to engineers, and will recommend the book to TRIZ novices and more experienced inventive problem solvers.

Seconds later, Reacher and the woman, FBI agent Holly Johnson (also daughter of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as goddaughter of the President), are kidnaped by armed gunmen. Handcuffed together and tossed in the back of a van, the two are taken to the Montana mountain stronghold of Beau Borken, a fat, ugly, psychopathically vicious neo-Nazi militia leader given to sawing the arms off day laborers and making windy speeches about how he brilliant he is. Of course, the kidnappers don't know that they have a former military police major in their clutches who, in addition to having a Silver Star for heroism, is one of the best snipers the Army has ever produced, can pull iron rings out of barn doors, and kill bad guys with lit cigarettes. Meanwhile, a team of FBI agents, at least one of whom is a mole leaking information to Borken, identify Reacher from a reconstructed photo taken from the dry cleaner's surveillance camera. Borken, impressed with Reacher's military record, lectures him about his brilliant plan to overthrow the US using a hijacked Army missile unit, with Holly held as a hostage in a specially constructed, dynamite-lined prison cell. Borken stupidly lets Reacher best him in a shooting match, then grandiosely turns his back on his captives enough times for Reacher and Holly to escape, cause havoc, get captured, escape, make love in the woods, cause more havoc, and get captured again, as General Johnson, FBI Director Harlan Webster, and General Garber, Reacher's former commander, plan a covert strike on Borken's fortress thats certain to fail. "I decided that once and for all I was going to make it or die trying." John Johnson

Jack Reacher is walking down a Chicago street when he stops to help a woman with a cane, struggle with her dry cleaning. Three men approach her with weapons drawn and abduct her, bringing Reacher along with them.

They bring the prisoners to their enclave in Montana and hold the woman, FBI agent, Holly Johnson, as a bargaining chip for what they plan with the government.

Reacher shows the reader his many talents in this second installment of his stories. We see him as the lone man against seemingly insurmountable odds. He's highly analytical and possesses keen inteligence. He's also able to rationalize what his captors are planning and figure out a possible escape. In "Die Trying," Reacher shows his feelings and develops a fondness for Holly. His compassion and strength are two of the reasons why readers enjoy Reacher as a character and are able to sympathise with him.

The plot is original and the author provides a number of surprises and plot twists that keep the reader's attention and add to the enjoyment of the story.

Try Dying

Considerable effort went into forming the overall plot judging from it's complexity but little went into the writing after that. This book is sloppy, with unlikely happenstances and soggy thinking on the part of the all the characters so thick that I eventually relaxed into it and just looked for more instead of worrying about the outcome like I'm supposed to do. And this when I have long since come to expect that that Reacher's life will always be ruled by unlikely good luck and happy coincidence. I really felt at several points that the author may have become so devoted to getting the book finished that he gave up serious thinking. This is a shame considering the man's talent. I have enjoyed other books in the series and kept plodding through this one just so I could say I finished it. But I never mind "too much description" in a novel as some do, and as for the violence others complain of, those readers who do not appreciate violence and who simply stop reading Jack Reacher novels have the right idea because horrendous violence and Jack Reacher go together like fingers in eyeballs, and if that doesn't do the trick the reader will find that no enemy of Jack Reacher ever suspects that he could possibly be a victim of a foot to the groin, so at a minimum they all thus suffer.

I thought his writing was good enough to keep reading

The first book had of the series had a note from the author which soured for me everything he has written. He wanted to write a story where the main character was different from others. In the process, I thought his writing was very similar to Robert B Parker's character Spenser. The fact that the author is English writing about the US isn't lost on me. For a relatively new author, I thought his writing was good enough to keep reading. I would say to all future writers, whatever your inspiration, keep it to yourself. Entertain the reader. Looking past some of the small questions, I think the author did an OK job.

Easy read, good information

I was curious to read this book as I have read several books written by the same author. It was an anedotal look at buying your first house as told by many of the most successful executives in the Keller Williams Realty family.

I found it interesting that no matter what their walk of life was when they originally purchased a home, they knew that it was the right thing to do, for the right reasons.

Home ownership does more than provide a roof over your head. It gives you the freedom to decorate the way you want to, instead of living in a house that the landlord won't allow you to make uniquely your own. It allows you to learn the responsiblity of ownership instead of relying on a landlord to take care of the property. It also showed that in most cases the value fo the property increased and created the largest share of a person's net worth.

It was an easy read, I think I read through the entire book in a couple of sittings. I would recommend it to anyone thinking of buying their first home, because it is not a sales book but the story of several different people from different parts ot the country that all experienced the same end result.

Cheesy but effective

Cheesy writing style but very informative for first time buyers. Breaks everything down into chapters in the order of the process. Full disclosure, I work for Keller Williams and figured I would read the book before I handed some of them to clients as marketing. Personally, I would cut out some of the sappy stuff but the organization and structure overall is very solid in this book.

So very out of date. The market has changed.

Ever so dated!

This book was not published in 2013 as stated by Amazon, the copyright is 2008. The author writes from the naive optimism of a zealous pre-crash realtor who equates home ownership with unlimited wealth potential, no-possible-loss investment and being a good 'Merican. I was expecting some savvy tips to deal with the cruel realities of the current market, but the 2008 copyright precludes that. Do not fall for their deception. So much has changed since 2008!

About the Author
Aviator and sailor Sir Francis Chichester is best known for being the first and fastest person to sail around the globe single-handedly in The Gipsy Moth IV. Following this achievement he wrote several books and made films about his sailing experiences.

Born in Devon and educated at Marlborough College, Chichester emigrated to New Zealand at the age of 18 and spent ten years in forestry, mining and property development. On his return to England he learned to fly, and in the original Gipsy Moth seaplane he became the first person to complete an East-West solo flight across the Tasman Sea, for which he was awarded the inaugural Amy Johnson Memorial Trophy.

Chichester wrote many popular books on his air adventures, and during WWII he wrote the manual that single-man fighter pilots used to navigate across Europe. In 1964 Chichester published his autobiography, the bestselling The Lonely Sea and the Sky, and was knighted three years later for 'individual achievement and sustained endeavour in the navigation and seamanship of small craft'.

Chichester used his navigation experience to create a successful map-making company, Francis Chichester Ltd, which today still publishes pocket guides and maps which are sold throughout the world.

Actually, a book about "British understatement" ...

I recall the thrill and deep emotion that came over me in 1967 when I saw TV coverage of England welcoming home Francis Chichester (soon to be "Sir Francis") from his "singlehander" circumnavigation of the planet. (I still tear up thinking about it.) I am not especially Anglophilic, but the man and the moment epitomized for this American all that is great and good about England and her people, even if the British Empire ain't what it used to be (which is very likely a good thing).

Alas, almost four decades later, I didn't find Chichester's memoir of the voyage an especially engaging read. "British understatement" is an understatement. One can admire the man's restraint in not overdramatizing the more perilous episodes of the voyage -- capsizing off Australia, rounding the Horn, etc. -- but the drama that certainly did accompany this maritime feat is hardly there at all. Nor is there a strong sense of the emotional and physical toll on a 65-year-old man (however fit) of operating a 53-foot sailing vessel 'round the clock, alone, for 226 days, snatching sleep a few hours at a time. Much of the routine is ... well, routine, and it begins to run together after a few chapters.

Chichester's mostly matter-of-fact recounting of the voyage is full of details about sails, masts, booms, navigation and other nautical equipment and tasks, details that are likely going to leave most 'lubbers (such as myself) a bit glassy-eyed. Find yourself a sailor's glossary, because there's none in this account. Although the book contains boat diagrams and a sail plan, keeping track of the genoas, staysails, and jibs becomes stultifying. There is also several pages' discourse on supplies and foodstuffs one would want for a long ocean voyage. (Take plenty of fresh eggs, but paint them with beeswax before stowage!)

In an epilogue, J.R.L. Anderson, himself no slouch of a sailor, and a more polished writer, succeeds in putting Chichester's achievement in perspective. "He has succeeded in making dreams come true, his own private dreams, and the dreams that most men have from time to time ... He has lived not alone his dreams, but ours too." Only occasionally does Sir Francis himself grant us such a personal insight, before returning to his litany of sail-setting, navigating, and trying to eat and sleep on the rolling sea in a boat heeled over 20 or 30 degrees.

All in all, a great man, a great feat, a disappointing book. If you are a yachtsman, or want to be, or if you are planning your own nautical sojourn, you may find this book more informative and entertaining than I did. Perhaps "British understatement" is what this volume is really about, after all.

Sailing with a 'Smoking'

Chichester's story-- of his nine-month single-handed circumnavigation of the world with just one port of call-- is laconically told. His bravery, focus and endurance was applauded by a crowd of thousands who celebrated his return to London. His worst moments were the realization that he had almost depleted his stock of his favorite drink, gin; whenever his solitary journey was interrupted by news-hungry reporters in boats or airplanes; whenever he had to prepare for and deliver a radio message to his newspaper sponsors. His best moments were consuming simple meals; playing music taped for him by his son; toasting his wife with champagne on their wedding anniversary while wearing his 'smoking'. Chichester is a man with a huge amount of will power and modesty. When he speaks of discomfort, danger, illness, injury, fear (and he experienced much of each during his journey), he brushes it aside as a necessary part of the challenge he accepted. He is a solitary man, sustained by his belief that he can achieve his extraordinary goal, and by his love for, and support from, his wife and son.

After watching "Deep Water", I became very interested in Chichester, Crowhurst, and Moitessier. As one who typically reads fiction (i.e. Clive Cussler, etc.), Chichester's account of his circumnavigation was evocative and revealing. It's hard to imagine nine months of solitude, danger, difficulties, and the perpetual needs of the boat. Apparently, he kept a very detailed journal because you feel as if you were sailing with him day by day. Who knew endless miles of open ocean could offer such variety and excitement? Chichester is very candid, descriptive, personable, and endearing. However, my next book to read is "The Long Way". No breaks in Sydney for that guy!

MMMM...yeah

I have become a huge fan of this stuff over the past few months as a friend turned me onto it. I have purchased a few recipe books on it before but I am always looking for new ideas and things to try. I found the book to be well organzied and easy to follow the recipes which was great. My favorite one so far was the Lemon and Ginger water. I am normally not a fan of ginger but for some reason it tasted awesome and it is really good for you as well.

I absolutely loved this book! There are a lot of fruit infused water books out there, and this is by far the best I've found. it has a ton of recipes and they are creative and unique combinations I haven't seen before. I have tried a few so far and they tasted great, I can't wait to try the rest. great book, highly recommended!!!!!

Wow, there really are 102 recipes jam packed in this book on how to make different types of fruit infused water. I've been drinking lemon in water for some time, and wanted to make some changes, so got this book. I was not disappointed! So many great ideas to flavor water. I suggest you get this book to change up what you are drinking
