This breezy narrative tells the story of Chicago between 1880 and 1930, including underworld mobsters, the origins of organized crime, and the men who laid down its foundations. An amalgam of amazing characters--from bootleggers of 1880 to influential gangsters like Al Capone, Johnny Torrio, and Roger Touhy--are vividly bought to life, without ever being dramatized or romanticized. But gangsters wielding a Tommy gun weren't the only villains of the day. There were also megalomaniacal tycoons, such as "King Mike" Mcdonald--who was a proponent of the phrase, "There's a sucker born every minute," and who had the clout to manipulate professional athletes to throw their pride aside for the lure of the dirty dollar as witnessed by the shame of the 1919 Chicago "Black" Sox. What could be discounted as another Chicago gangster book, separates itself from the pack by the vivid detail with which it resurrects the flamboyant underworld characters, high-society capitalists and crooked politicians who ran The Windy City from 1880-1931 and established its notorious persona. Insightful parallels are drawn here between corrupt politicians, such as Michael "Hinky Dink" Kenna, gangsters like Al Capone, and great dynasts like Marshall Field and meatpacker Philip Armour, whose credo for success was " . . . buy out or destroy any competitor whose products are better than your own." And while Johnson ( Nobody's Perfect ) and Sautter ( Expresslanes Through the Inevitable City ) sometimes bombard the reader with extraneous details, they make up for it in convincing reenactments of shoot-outs: "Plaster and glass and splinters of paneling went flying, neat rows of bullet holes stitched themselves at waist level into walls." Portrayed here is a city in which politicians assisted bootleggers during prohibition and racketeers determined election results; a city that couldn't even keep its baseball team clean--witness the infamous 1919 White Sox. With cameo appearances by Babe Ruth, Al Jolson, Gloria Swanson and Mickey Mouse, this book has an all-star cast that may be cumbersome, but is never boring. Photos not seen by PW.

Fiction writer Johnson (Song for Three Voices, LJ 5/1/85) has created a raucous, sprawling mural of Chicago from 1880 to 1931, with chapters on Theodore Dreiser and jazz contributed by Sautter. Johnson has a good ear for a punch line, and his breezy style keeps the narrative moving. He offers a drama with no heroes; the central characters are Al Capone and his mentor, Johnny Torrio. The rest of the cast are mostly other gangsters, corrupt politicians, and greedy capitalists, with a few artists and athletes. The final chapter contains a diatribe against capitalism and American politics past and present. This polemic is meant to serve as the context for evaluating the characters and careers of Capone and Torrio, but it gives the book an unfortunate tone of cynicism. A marginal purchase, in spite of the enduring popularity of the subject matter.

An Unsung Nugget

I have read a number of books on Chicago during the time of Al Capone including three of his biographies, but this book is an overlooked gem. I accidentally came across it here at Amazon and decided to give it a try. All the colorful characters are here including those Lords of the Levee (Bathhouse John and Hinky Dink) and a number of gangsters during that time period you may have heard of and others that will likely be new to you. Yes, there are chapters of the McCormicks of Chicago, Jack Dempsey, the boxing champion of the time period, Louis Armstrong, and buffoon mayor, Big Bill Thompson. Some readers may feel they are being told more than they care to know about Chicago prior to and during the Capone era. I did not feel this way. I have often wondered what happened to a number of the lesser lights who were not as well known. The author provides us with this information. Also pointed out is that just saying a gangster was shot a number of times and killed doesn't do justice to the horror of what takes place. In addition to the tears of loved ones there is "no romance in mob warfare, only life's red blood, torn flesh, and death." Many of these mobsters died in their twenties or thirties. Sooner or later, usually sooner, most of them found their way to Mt. Carmel Cemetery. This book rates a solid five stars. I wish it was in hard cover. If you are interested in this time period I would suggest you get a copy and read it. You will not be disappointed.

a narrative of no flow

I'm the sure that the main draw to this book concerns the seedy, gangster underworld of Chicago. I don't know if I have enough patience to get there; the narrative so far relates sound-bite stories of the founders, urban planners, and architects who first erected this city. It's extremely interesting material, but Johnson's flits over it all in barely readable, fragmented prose. Furthermore, as one unfamiliar with the city (especially as it was in the 1800s), his descriptions of the landscape (and the design of the buildings) leaves me still with a black box imagination of what the city looks like. Pictures or illustrations would well suit the understanding of this book, which would lead to the (hopeful point of the story) understanding of the city.

Interesting Look at Chicago's past villians and others

This book gives readers a sense of Chicago's past by examining notorious villains and others that inhabited our city during its period of great expansion from 1880-1930. During that time Chicago grew on the strength of industry and immigration from 503,000 persons in 1880 to well over 3 million by 1930. These pages contain vignettes about gangsters like Johnny Torrio and Al Capone (both were originally from New York), crooked yet caring politicians like Bathhouse John Coughlin and Hinky Dink Kenna, and arrogant tycoons like George Pullman and Charles Yerkes. There's also some discussion of good guy artists like Louis Armstrong, Theodore Dreiser, Carl Sandburg, etc., but the book is mostly devoted to the non-angelic. The vignettes are never too long, and always interesting, but the narrative seems a bit unorganized, and it helps if one is acquainted with the city's general history. Still, this is an interesting book.

Our city probably deserves its reputation for corruption, but one wonders why the like sins of other cities are so often ignored. Whatever the reasons, this narrative makes an interesting read.

a good help and complete study reference for starting welding

A through and well organized booklet with a lot of pictures and diagrams showing methods and important aspects of welding. It is a good help and study reference for starting welding. It would be best to have a mentor, even though there are a lot of safety and precaution guides. A Very Well Thought Out, Very Well Scientifically Researched, & Impressively Well Written Book!

Everyone, undoubtedly, has to face Depression at some point of time in their life. No exception to that. Rather stressing out about Depression or getting frustrated with it, it's 100 times wise to deal with it. But a million dollar question is how one can deal with it? Aid of antidepressants, medicines, even meditation and yoga gives a very little result or temporary feel good effect sometime, or doesn't give the exact same result in every case!

The monster always comes back to give another nightmare!!

Unless we understand this subject as a whole, we will fall short in dealing with it for sure. However, there is only so much to know. So what's the Solution? This book. Yes, this book will help you deal with the subject of Depression in a wholesome way. One need to know only this much knowledge that is presented in this book to deal, understand and solve the Depression from the root.

When I read this book, I have finished it in one sitting, just couldn't put it a side. I realized I would never go up to this extent to nail down the
subject of Depression. The author has presented not only the emotional, psychological and medical treatment aspects of Depression, but offered a unique blend of yogic perspective, Ayurveda knowledge, and complete understanding of complexities of life and relationships and imprints of the life events on our mind. That made this book a worth of my reading time.

The book presents the understanding of Depression, the uniqueness of each cases and offers varieties of solution to deal with it. Yes this book covers the real life case studies from across the cultures to make it all inclusive.

A very well thought out, very well scientifically researched, and above all impressively well written book presented with a genuine intention to help the victims! I am thankful to it's author for writing such a beautiful book! It helped a lot to understand many things.

This marvelous book “When all is not well” accompanies the readers to discover genuine findings by themselves. The clever, sincere and contemporary perspective of Om Swami who understands very well this complex world, reveals several answers by more natural and practical approaches to overcome the depression in the long term and for this I mean not temporary.

A Masterpiece! Do yourself a favor by reading it!

Yet another masterpiece by Om Swami. Extraordinary! Swami’s writing style is very clear, touching and addictive. I couldn’t put the book down until completion. His years of experience working with depressed people clearly shows through in his words. This is a must read for everyone (no matter who you are, whether you had depression or not).

Having been a victim to this demon called Depression, I stand testimonial to Om Swami’s healing touch. His loving and empathic words worked magic on me. He made me feel wanted in what felt like a wicked world. This book moved me to tears because I could relate to each one of those stories. A deep sense of compassion touched me triggering a desire to spread awareness about depression. It’s a condition that you don’t want even your enemy to experience.

This book, written from a Yogic perspective, has the potential to change, rather save lives. I’m planning to gift this book to everyone I know who needs help. Please do yourself and your loved ones a favor by reading this book.

About the Author
Christine Heinrichs is the author of How to Raise Chickens and How to Raise Poultry (both Voyageur Press, 2013) and has won many awards over the course of her 30-year writing career. She holds a degree in journalism from the University of Oregon and is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, the Society of Environmental Journalists, the Northern California Science Writers Association, and Ten Spurs, the honorary society of the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference. She is also a member of the American Poultry Association, where she serves on the Heritage Breeds Committee, the American Bantam Association, and the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. She lives with her husband, chickens, and cat in Cambria, California.

Impressive!

This is a fine book! The first thing you notice is that even the physical book—the high quality paper and binding, the beautiful photography—is part of the author's "labor of love." When you look inside, you quickly see how well the material is organized. There is a clear, graphic table of contents that points you to lots of information, in a reader-friendly format.

It's clear that the author of this book has had plenty of experience raising chickens. You get all the instruction you need to raise chickens and keep them healthy—and a whole chapter on the benefits of raising chickens. There is a most interesting history on how chickens have become domestic birds and a full chapter on what is common to all chickens: anatomical features, how they function (externally and internally), egg making and egg hatching. Additionally, peppered throughout these chapters are interesting panels that point out fun, interesting facts about chickens.

The second half of the book is an extensive, colorful guide to chicken breeds in the US and around the world. Who would have guessed there was so much variety in the chicken world! (Great photos, too.) At the end of the book is a useful appendix that includes a very complete glossary of terms and, in case you might be interested, a section on showing chickens.

This book is filled with beautiful photos of all the different types of chicken breeds. I love watching chickens roam around a yard and turning the pages of this book is the next best thing. It also contains a wealth of information about all the breeds so you can decide which ones will work for you and your needs; eggs, breeding, or just pure enjoyment.

"In this hell of noise, man disintegrates and is lost." Cardinal Sarah is not a writer in the same league as Pope Benedict or von Hildebrand. But he is a truly remarkable man with remarkable thoughts. If you haven't read God or Nothing, I would read that first to better understand where Cardinal Sarah is coming from. But don't miss this book and its message. My only regret is that it ranks #541 on the Amazon best seller list.

I think this is the most important book on the market right now. Not that its subject matter would ever be untimely, but it is especially timely in our tweet-saturated, attention-dispersed, blinking-light modern world. This is one of those books where I have to stop myself from underlining just about everything. Theologically, it is remarkably astute and instructive. Spiritually, it is as nourishing a read as any book I can remember reading.

A Good History of an Intellectually Stimulating Historical Era

Charles Homer Haskins' book titled THE RENIASSANCE OF THE TWELFTH CENTURY is a well written, well researched book that refutes the notion that somehow the years between c. 500-1500 AD were "the Dark Ages." Haskins book is "a must read" for those who have an interest in Medieval History.

Haskins presented an interesting thesis about cultuural/intellectual exchanges prior to the 12th.century(1100s). The book challenged the notion that Medieval Europeans were ignorant and unlearned prior to the Crusades (1096-1291). Haskins argued that there were cultural/intellectual exchanges prior to the Crusades espeacially in Southern Italy. The Byzantines Greeks and Arabic Moslems had trade in this area even after the disintegration of Roman Empire. Haskins suggested that the market place of goods was also a "market place of ideas." Gradually such exchanges and ideas penetrated Northern Europe.

Haskins dicussed early Medieval intellectual centers which were concentrated in the monestaries and cathederal schools. The monestaries were in effect beacons of light and learning. A point that other Haskins and other Medieval historians have made is the intellectual debt that Western Civilization owes to the nameless heroic monks and nuns.

The chaper on the production and publication of books is simply an important part of this book. Haskins gave precise details of how the monks hand copied books including the Ancient Clasics and the Bible. He commented that writing/hand copying books was "a labor of love." The monks believed that every word, sentence, and page meant the forgiveness of sins. There is an anecdote whereby one monk wrote one more word than he committed his sins which led to his salvation. The work of book production was so important that those monks who did such work were relieved of physical labor. Often groups of scribes would collaborate to get a book finished, and when the book was finished, there was celebration and a feast. The value of books was very dear. Haskins provided and example whereby in 1043, the Bishop of Barcelona gave a house and land for two books. Books were indeed valuable. The notion that anti-Catholics use that the Catholic authorities did not want people to read the Bible is ludicrous. Haskins stated that Bibles were chained in the cathederals and monestaries to prevent theft. These Bibles were chained to insure their continued use rather than any attempt to restrict their use. Readers must know that just how hard book production was and the arduous efforts involved in such publication efforts.

The teachers and students were also involved in reviving and enhancing the Latin Classics and the Latin language. One must know that the Latin language was the universal language of all teaching, learning, and the Catholic Church. The Latin classics and translations of Greek literature was at first read and learned for moral instuction. Gradually such learning was done for the joy of great literature. While some Catholic authorities were cautious of such learning from pagans, the decision was made to encourage such learning because Catholic authorities did not want ignorant priests and monks.

The introduction of Aristotle's philosophy was an interesting part of this book. Church authorities were concerned of Aristotle's influence corrupting the Catholic Faith. While there were offical restrictions on teaching and learning of Aristotle in the Medieval schools, these were never rigidly enforced. By 1255, such restructions were abondoned. While the Latin Classics were never abandoned, they were reduced in importance by the introduction of Aristotle's logic and dialectic. Haskins cited a Medieval work about the War Between the Liberal Arts and Logic in which Logic won.

The section of the revival of the study of law was also informative. The Medieval Canon Law jurists not only revived Roman Law and developed Canon Law, the Catholic Canon Law jurists developed a "scientific legal system." Roman Law was viewed with suspicion in Medieval England, and Henry II (1154-1189)tried to eliminate such studies. Haskins was very specific to explain that improved studies in Law began in Italy and preceeded Gratian's exhaustive work which was produced c. 1140.

One must ask how so much learning that was written in Greek and Arabic became available in the Latin West. Haskins gave a detailed explanation of the translators who did the translations to make Greek and Arabic knowledge available in the Latin West. Such work must have been taken seriously. Historians have combed a monastary that existed c 1140. Historians discovered texts written in Arabic, Greek,and Hebrew. This undermines the notion that somehow the monks were ignorant and unlearned men.

The chapter on translators was logically followed by the revival of studies of philosophy which became "the handmaid of theology." As one might expect that while there serious studies of Plato's DIALOGUES, Aristotle's philosophy dominated philosophical studies. Yet Haskins made clear, Aristotle could be just as mystical as Plato.

The chapter on universities is thorough. One can glean this topic by reading Haskins book THE RISE OF THE UNIVERSITIES which this reviwer has previously reviewed. Haskins undermined the notion that everyone was forced to think the same which is simply not true. Rarely did the Catholic authorities interfere, and Medieval teachers and students thought of themselve intellectually free. An important part of Medieval teaching and learning was the debates which, according to sources, were lively and spirited. For example, Peter Abelard (1079-1142)wrote a university text titled SIC ET NON (YES AND NO)in which he showed students the apparent contradictions of the Bible, Church Fathers, Catholic Church councils, etc. Abelard did not resolve these apparent contractions, and he used this text to have his students logically resolve these problems. Abelard was never admonished for this book. Further examination of Medieval universities can be learned from the above mentioned book.

Haskins book is a good comparison and contrast of contemporary learning and teaching. Compared to totalitarian regimes and their control over education, this book is refreshing antidote. One must also consider the childish and nonsensical political correct atmosphere of most U.S. unversities which discourages intelligent debate and exchange. Medieval universities encouraged intense learning and debate which was "uninhibited, robust, and wide open." One wonders which age was the "Dark Ages" when comparing the two concepts of teaching and learning. Contemporaries can read and enjoy this book if only as an escape from what many try to pass off as education.

The Premier Book of Early Middle Ages Research

Despite its age, this book is still the premiere piece fo scholarship on the Twelfth Century. The late Harvard professor Haskins was a master at presenting detailed, insightful research in an easy, accessible manner. Everyone, from the average reader to the advanced researcher will be greatly satisfied with this erudite work.
In this book, which he did throughout all of his career, he presents history in the broader sense: history that is flowing and morphic, not static and pigeonholed. He believed that breaking history up into little arbitrary units of measure, like the century or a decade, while convenient, led to unrealistic expectations of periods or breaks between events, eras, and cultures. History for Professor haskins was very much alive and could not be contained for our convenience, hence it overflowed our self-imposed boundaires, and events which occurred in one era, had their origins far back in time and their ramifications felt far forward in time. Nothing is encapsulated and cut off from the rest of time.
The Renaissance of the Twelfth Century is a very important book, because it recaptures the early Middle Ages from the dustbin of Dark Ages ignorance where all the centuries after the Fall of Rome and the better known Italian Renaissance of the 15th Century are thrown. It proves that scholarship and learning were vigorous, that the liberal arts flourished in towns, cathedrals, monasteries, and the newly founded universities (which is covered much more fully in his book The Rise of the Universities), and therein lay the expansion of the earlier Carolingian scholarship, the salvation of the Latin classics and laws, and rediscovery of Greek philosophy, literature, and sciences, and the influx of Arabic learning that was so influential in the later eruption of learning that led to the greater Renaissances and modern times. He proves however, that there were local origins of learning and that the arts grew very much out of their own cultural bedrocks. These were not ignorant scribes only copying work from far away and a millennia before, but intelligent and resourceful scholars who bettered themselves and their times.
Haskins is a master historian and this book remains a classic of the genre.
